PREVIEW: Track and Field at Jesse Owens Classic

PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne University track & field teams are off to Columbus, Ohio this weekend to compete in the Jesse Owens Classic at Ohio State.

BENSON/HODGE MEMORIAL INVITATIONAL 

  • The Dukes will also send a group of athletes to the Benson/Hodge Memorial Invitational on Friday at Robert Morris in Moon Township, Pa.

LAST TIME OUT 

  • Duquesne posted nine top-five marks in program history with eight on the women's side and one by the men's squad at Bucknell's Bison Outdoor Classic last weekend. 
  • Madelyn Moretti headlined the eight on the women's team by breaking her own school record in the shot put (45.75m / 150' 1") ... Freshman Vincent Rupp cleared 1.98m (6' 6") to move up to a tie for second all-time at Duquesne on the men's side. 
  • Hannah Seitzinger (800m – 2nd), Halle Walcutt (heptathlon – 3rd), Jamelah Carswell (heptathlon – 4th and 400m hurdles – 4th), Mia Pierce (discus – 5th), Haley Hamilton (3k steeplechase – 5th), and Liv Wilson (800m – 5th) all recorded top-five marks in program history at Bucknell.

THIS SEASON IN THE RECORD BOOK 

  • WOMEN'S RECORD BOOK 
    • Madelyn Moretti reset her own school record last weekend in the shot put with a long of 14.50m (150' 1"). 
    • Hannah Seitzinger bettered her second-fastest time in DU history in the 800m with a career-best 2:07.29 at Bucknell last weekend ... Liv Wilson charted the fifth-fastest time in the same race at Bucknell with a 2:10.80. 
    • Megan Penrod moved up to second on the all-time list in the javelin with a 42.71m (140' 1") at George Mason. 
    • Ezra Johnson-Mills set a personal-best mark to 48.80m in the women's hammer throw on opening weekend at the CMU Invitational, placing her second all-time at DU. 
    • Halle Walcutt (4674 points) and Jamelah Carswell (4534 points) bettered their third and fourth-place standings in the record book in the heptathlon with strong outings at Bucknell ... Carswell also entered the top-five in the 400m hurdles with the fourth-fastest time ever at DU (1:01.10) ran at Bucknell. 
    • Amber McCool set a new personal best in the javelin (41.29m / 135' 5") at George Mason to become fifth all-time at Duquesne. 
    • Haley Hamilton PR'd in the 3000m steeplechase for the second time this season with a 10:36.66 at the Bison Outdoor Classic, ranking fifth all-time at Duquesne. 
    • Freshman Mia Pierce recorded the fifth-best discus mark at Duquesne with a 45.83m (150' 4") throw last weekend. 
  • MEN'S RECORD BOOK 
    • Freshman Vincent Rupp is now tied for second all-time at 1.98m (6' 6") in the high jump after just three meets as a Duke. 

DUKES IN THE TOP-10 OF THE A-10 

  • WOMEN'S A-10 PERFORMANCE LIST 

    • Jamelah Carswell leads the A-10 in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.10 set last weekend ... Anna Rorrer (1:04.30) and Eva Leatherman (1:04.99) are right behind in fourth and fifth with season-best times at Bucknell ... Carswell (9th) and Emily Brozeski (10th) also rank in the 100m hurdles, while Carswell is eighth in the long jump (5.61m). 
    • Halle Walcutt and Jamelah Carswell are second and third in the top heptathlon scores this season. 
    • Mia Pierce's 45.83m discus is second in the league, while Moretti is right behind in third with a long of 45.75m ... Both marks were set last weekend. 
    • In the shot-put standings, Madelyn Moretti's school record is second in the A-10 this season and Rachel Koonmen is eighth at 12.99m. 
    • Hannah Seitzinger ranks third in both the 400m (55.43) and 800m (2:07.29) races in the A-10 ... Amy Allen is fifth in the 400m (55.82) and Liv Wilson is ninth in the 800m (2:10.80). 
    • Haley Hamilton's 3k steeplechase time of 10:36.66 is third in the A-10. 
    • Sadie Wetzel ranks third in the high jump with a season-high 1.68m cleared at George Mason. 
    • Megan Penrod (3rd), Amber McCool (7th) and Mia Pierce (8th) rank in the top-10 for javelin throw. 
    • Brooke Krally moved into sixth in the A-10 standings for the 10k after a 36:21.82 last weekend. 
    • Ezra Johnson-Mills is eighth in the hammer throw. 
    • The Wilson, Whalen, Valotta, Hamilton 4x800m relay team ranks second in the league, while the Willis, Allen, Carswell, Seitzinger 4x400m team is fourth. 
  • MEN'S A-10 PERFORMANCE LIST 

    • Vincent Rupp's outstanding freshman campaign so far ranks third in the A-10. 
    • Ryan Ellison ranks fifth in the 110 hurdles at 14.68 ran at George Mason. 
    • David Williams is sixth in the 400m with a 48.33 recorded last weekend. 
    • Cameron Bogdan's season-opening 9:30.09 in the 3k steeplechase is seventh in the league. 
    • Christian Cupp's 7.00m long jump last weekend was the sixth-longest in the A-10 this season. 
    • Rocco Caprara (hammer throw) and Joe Klanchar (javelin) are both seventh in their respective league standings. 
    • Cam Mbalo ranks ninth in the triple jump at 14.17m. 
    • The relay teams rank third in the 4x800m (Carson, Hamilton, Colli, Barnhisel) and eighth in the 4x400m (Eagle, Hamilton, Nizami, Rahman) 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK 

  • Freshman Mia Pierce was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week on April 9 after placing fourth in discus (43.34m / 142' 2") and fifth in javelin (38.84m / 127' 5") mark at George Mason's Dalton Ebanks Invitational ... The marks, which both have been improved since, ranked third and ninth overall and first and second among A-10 rookies at the time. 

UP NEXT 

  • Next week, Duquesne will have athletes at both the Penn Relays in Philadelphia and the Father Bede Invitational hosted by Saint Francis (PA).
