Keck Debuts With Program Record, Dukes Win Three Events on Opening Weekend

Charlotte, N.C. – Freshman Makayla Keck broke the Duquesne program record in the javelin in her collegiate debut, leading three event victories as the Dukes opened the 2026 outdoor track and field season at the 49er Classic.

EVENT WINNERS
Keck captured the javelin meet title with a throw of 49.41 meters (162-1), surpassing the previous school record of 45.80 meters set by Julia Franzosa in 2016. Her record-setting mark came on the first attempt of her collegiate career and held as the top throw of the meet.

Fellow freshman Sylvia Kashak picked up where she left off following a record-setting indoor season, winning the 800 meters in 2:10.11, finishing more than two seconds ahead of the field. Kashak also placed second in the 1,500 meters in 4:29.94, ranking fourth in program history, while her 800-meter time moves her to fifth all-time at Duquesne.

Senior Nathaniel Woshner earned his first career meet victory, winning the 3,000 meters in 8:43.43, nearly six seconds ahead of the runner-up.

WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS

  • Freshman Mary Grusky placed second in the javelin with a mark of 47.08 meters (154-5). Her throw came on her first collegiate attempt, surpassed the previous program record and now ranks second in school history behind Keck. Megan Penrod followed in fourth at 40.52 meters (132-11), giving the Dukes three of the top four finishers.
  • Rose Kuchera was second in both the long jump (5.81m / 19-0.75) and triple jump (12.26m / 40-2.75).
  • Caroline Garbe cleared 1.68 meters (5-6) to finish runner-up in high jump Group A.
  • Mia Pierce took second in the discus with a throw of 47.26 meters (155-1).
  • The 4x800-meter relay of Cydney Blahovec, Elizabeth Pizon, Eilidh Edgar and Kendall Lucas finished second in 9:23.54.
  • Nadia Constantakis cleared 3.60 meters (11-9.75) in fourth place of pole vault.
  • Eva Leatherman recorded a fourth-place finish in the 400 meters (1:01.64). Anna Rorrer crossed fifth in both the 100-meter hurdles (14.28) and 400-meter hurdles (1:02.99).
  • Lauren Stroka (11.53m / 37-10) and Devlyn Faber (11.45m / 37-6.75) placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the triple jump.
  • Freshman Melani Schmidt ran 24.99 in the 200 meters, ranking fifth-fastest in program history. She also took eighth in the 400 meters (56.62).
  • Reagan Ryen (1,500 meters – 4:52.63) and Megan Palinski (hammer throw – 35.24m / 115-7) each recorded personal bests.
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nick Keller entered the Duquesne top five in two events in his collegiate debut, running 47.67 in the 400 meters and 21.50 in the 200 meters. His 400-meter time placed fourth at the meet, and both marks rank fifth in program history.
  • Jadon Rahman (1:52.84, 5th), Jack Barnhisel (1:53.92, 8th) and Maxwell Hamilton (1:54.34, 10th) opened the season with top-10 finishes in the 800 meters.
  • The 4x800-meter relay of Hamilton, Rahman, Sam de la Riva and Jack Pritchard placed second in 7:48.72, then the 4x400-meter quartet of Colm Matheney, Aiden Everett, Cody Mankowski and Christian Cupp finished sixth in 3:18.38.
  • Cupp added fourth in the long jump with a mark of 7.06 meters (23-2) and added a seventh-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 3.98 meters (13-0.75).
  • Mason Stewart ran his first 3,000-meter race as a Duke and crossed in eighth with a 9:10.98.
  • Greg Tindle (52.83m / 173-4) and Cody Mankowski (50.58m / 165-11) each recorded personal bests to finish eighth and ninth, respectively, in the javelin.
  • Colm McGroarty was 10th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.43.
  • Adding personal bests were; Isaac Wetzel (200 meters – 23.22), Colm Matheney (110-meter hurdles – 15.86) and Austin Foster (discus –  39.38m / 129-2).
UP NEXT
Duquesne makes the short trip to the Carnegie Mellon Invitational next Friday and Saturday at Geisling Stadium in Pittsburgh.
