Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University bowling team wrapped up competition Sunday in the Hawk Classic in Woodbridge, Va., finishing sixth. The Dukes racked up 11,721 total pins over the course of five Baker and six traditional matches, posting a record of 7-4.
In bracket play Sunday, Duquesne opened with a 4-2 win over No. 23 Delaware State before dropping a 4-2 decision to No. 4 North Carolina A&T in a game for fifth place. The Dukes own an overall record of 29-17 (.630) during the 2023-24 season.
Duquesne opened play at Bowl America Woodbridge by concluding traditional play with a 1,080-1,001 victory over Lincoln Memorial. Freshman
Maribeth Baker bolstered the efforts for the Dukes by rolling a 278, pushing her pin total for the Hawk Classic to 1,398. That effort was good enough to lay claim to a share of the individual title, as her 233.00 average and 1,398 pins were also accomplished by Cassidy Anschutz of Merrimack.
It marks the second consecutive tournament a Duquesne student-athlete has won an individual crown, as Baker follows in the footsteps of junior
Morgan Brookover, who
won the first Northeast Conference (NEC) competition in North Brunswick, N.J., last weekend. Brookover took home a top 10 finish at the Hawk Classic, finishing seventh thanks to 1,359 total pins and a 226.50 average.
Baker is the third rookie in program history to win an individual tournament, joining graduate student
Kiearra Saldi and junior
Ranelle Ulanday. Saldi won Northeast Conference (NEC) Meet #2 in December of 2019 with 1,272 total pins in six games, while Ulanday won the James Brown Invitational in February of 2022 with 1,111 pins in five contests. Baker's average of 233.00 at the Hawk Classic ranks fifth in program history and is also the top mark by a freshman in the Duquesne record book.
Saldi, meanwhile, earned third place Sunday after rolling a 221 against Lincoln Memorial to finish traditional play with 1,376 pins. She finished one pin ahead of Isabel Allen of Jacksonville State and recorded an average score of 229.33.
Duquesne now gears up for NEC #2, which is set for Saturday, Dec. 2, and Sunday, Dec. 3, in Mechanicsburg, Pa., at Trindle Bowl. It marks the final competition of the 2023 calendar year for the Dukes.
