Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA - The Duquesne women's tennis team scored a pair of wins in the City of Brotherly Love with an Atlantic 10 victory over Saint Joseph's, before concluding the day with a victory over the University of the Sciences (D2) Friday.
The Dukes (9-8, 2-1 A-10) defeated St. Joe's 5-2 and went on to defeat USciences 4-0 to complete the two-win day.
Wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles helped the Dukes secure the point versus Saint Joseph's.
Meredith Lee and
Priyanka Mitta cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles, while
Ana Utrilla Benito and
Ellen Shanahan earned a 7-6 (10-8) tiebreaker win at No. 3 doubles to clinch the important point.
Shanahan and Lee both picked up additional points for Duquesne in singles play. Shanahan was dominant in a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over SJU's Stow Weiss. Lee railled back for a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) win at No. 6 singles to add to the team's point total.
Daniela Latoni and
Natasha Novak also earned wins in singles play versus the Hawks. Latoni notched a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles, while Novak added an impressive 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles to help secure the league victory.
The Dukes won each match that was completed against the Red Devils of USciences, including all three doubles matches.
Straight-set wins by Latoni (No. 3), Novak (No. 4) and Blanca Benet Garcia (No. 5) clinched the team victory for the Dukes and ended the match with USciences. The final three matches were not finished, although Duquesne led in all three of those competitions.
The Dukes will take on Carnegie Mellon on Friday, April 15 for another non-league match.
