Morgantown, W.Va. – The Duquesne women's tennis team continued its fall campaign with a pair of tournament appearances, competing at the Martha Thorn Invitational hosted by West Virginia and the Atlantic 10 Masters hosted by Davidson.
The Dukes collected five singles victories and four doubles wins at the Martha Thorn Invitational, while
Dasha Chichkina and
Mila Badics highlighted Duquesne's performance at the A10 Masters.
Freshman
Gabby Dusi led Duquesne in singles at the Martha Thorn Invitational, posting a pair of victories. She opened play with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 sweep of West Virginia's Sela Byers before battling back for a 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-5 victory over Penn State's Kate Zink. Dusi's run came to an end against West Virginia's Sosanne Malaak, falling 6-3, 6-2.
Freshman Jana Bozinovka also picked up a singles victory, earning a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win over Zink. She later dropped matches to Liberty's Aranai Martinez, 6-2, 6-4, and Penn State's Brianna Baldi, 6-3, 6-2.
Junior
Naomi Lalonde battled through a pair of tightly contested singles matches, opening against West Virginia's Sorana Matis. Lalonde fell in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 4-6, 10-6, before dropping another three-set battle to Liberty's Yoanna Radulova, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
Senior
Sofia Serrano faced a pair of tough opponents, falling to Radulova, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), before dropping a 6-1, 7-5 decision to Malaak.
Junior
Denisse Arinez Guilarte also competed in a pair of singles matches, falling to Martinez, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), before dropping a 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 decision to Baldi.
In doubles action, Arinez Guilarte and Lalonde posted a pair of victories. The Duquesne duo opened with a 6-2 win over West Virginia's Matis and Ela Plosnik before edging Marshall's Nour El Ouazzani and Amelie Gomez, 7-6 (8-6). The pair closed the weekend with a 6-2 setback against Marshall's Sarah Copley and Mokrynska.
Serrano and Bozinovka also competed in doubles, falling to West Virginia's Laura Villanueva Morillo and Lucia Tognoni, 6-3, before dropping a 6-2 decision to Penn State's Baldi and Zink.
A10 MASTERS
At the A10 Masters, Chichkina advanced to the singles semifinals before seeing her run come to an end against Rhode Island's Iben Mol, falling 6-4, 6-1.
Badics also advanced deep into the singles draw, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to Davidson's Charlotte Calderwood, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).
The Duquesne duo of Chichkina and Badics also made a run in the doubles draw. The pair opened with an 8-4 victory over Richmond's Barbulescu and Webber before falling to Fordham's Ueno Dalmonico and Nguyen in the semifinals, 9-8 (7-2).
