PREVIEW: Duquesne at Delaware

Duquesne travels to Delaware to take on the Blue Hens on Sunday, with tip-off set for 2:00 P.M. ET.

THE SERIES - vs. DELAWARE
  • The Dukes and Blue Hens have met two times, with the teams splitting the matchups.
  • The two teams met twice in 2012-13. Duquesne won the home matchup while Delaware won a neutral game.
  • The second matchup was the championship in the 2012 Blue Sky Classic.
LAST MEETING - Dec. 30, 2012
  • Delaware beat Duquesne in the championship of the 2012 Blue Sky Classic, 60-45, the last time they met.
  • April Robinson led Duquesne with 12 points in the low-scoring affair.
  • The Dukes shot just 28.3% from the field.
SCOUTING DELAWARE
  • Delaware is 5-2 and coming off a 74-52 win over Delaware State. 
  • The Blue Hens beat Illinois in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Nov. 26, 83-80. 
  • They also beat one of Duquesne's A-10 opponents, VCU, 63-50 back on on Nov. 15. 
  • Makayla Pippin leads the team in scoring (11.6 ppg) and rebounding (9.7 rpg).
  • Delaware lost all five starters from last season and brings in seven newcomers.
  • Delaware was picked to finish sixth in the CAA this season. 
  • The Blue Hens are led by head coach Sarah Jenkins, who has a 5-2 overall record in her first season.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Despite a furious fourth quarter rally, Duquesne fell to Tulsa, 65-59, on Thursday night.
  • Down 20 in the second half, the Dukes got the deficit all the way down to one point, but were not able to take the lead.
  • Ayanna Townsend set a new career high with 21 points. 
  • Megan McConnell also set a new career high, hauling in 15 rebounds.
  • Precious Johnson scored 14 on 7-for-111 shooting.
  • As a team, Duquesne shot just 33.3 percent from the field and 25.0 percent from three.
STAT CHECK
  • Megan McConnell's assist/turnover ratio (2.40) ranks second in the conference (48th in nation). She is also one of of only five players in the country with a triple-double this season. Her 9.9 rebounds per game lead the A-10 and rank 31st in the country. Her 8.6 defensive rebounds per game rank 8th nationally.
  • Tess Myers ranks third the A-10 and 33rd in the country with 2.86 three-pointers per game this season. Her 20 three-pointers made are the sixth-most in the conference. Her 90 total threes last season led the conference and ranked 14th in the nation. 
  • The Dukes lead the A-10 in rebounds per game (43.7, 32nd in nation) and defensive rebounds per game (31.6, 15th in nation). Their assist/turnover ratio (1.16) ranks 42nd nationally and second in the conference while their field goal percentage defense (35.2%) ranks second in the conference. and 39th nationally.

  • Duquesne ranks 39th in the country and second in the conference in field goal percentage defense, with opposing teams shooting just 35.1 percent against the Dukes.
  • The Dukes' scoring defense ranks fifth in the conference as opposing teams have scored just 61.9 points per game.
  • The Dukes held opponents to under 50 points five times last season and won eight games by double digits. They have won three games by double-digits already this year.
  • Duquesne held an opponent to under 50 points just once during the previous 2020-21 season (George Mason) and did not win any games in 2020-21 by double digits.
  • The 44 points allowed by Duquesne in its win versus St. Bonaventure last year was the fewest points yielded by the squad since the Dukes limited the Bonnies to 39 on Jan. 30, 2020. They nearly matched that against Point Park this season, allowing only 47 points.
BEASTS ON THE BOARDS
  • Megan McConnell leads the A-10 with 9.9 rebounds per game, which ranks 31st nationally. Her 8.6 defensive rebounds per game rank 8th in the nation.
  • She led the team with 6.4 rebounds per game last season, which ranked 10th in the conference. 
  • McConnell hauled in at least five rebounds in 22 games last season. She has five or more in all seven games so far this year.
  • Ayanna Townsend ranks second on the team and 13th in the A-10 with 6.9 rebounds per game. 
  • Precious Johnson ranks third on the team and 15th in the conference with 6.7 rebounds per game. 
  • Duquesne's 31.6 defensive rebounds per game ranks 15th in the country. The Dukes' 43.7 rebounds per game rank 32th in the country. 
PLAYING LIKE A MCCONNELL
  • In addition to rebounds, Megan McConnell leads the team in steals per game (3.3, 18th in nation) and assists per game (5.1, 47th in nation). 
  • Last year she led the team in both assists (4.1) and steals (2.6) per game.
  • She has 23 steals already, recorded five in the season opener and had six in the Marshall game. 
  • McConnell recorded a career-high eight steals versus George Washington on Feb. 9, 2022.
  • It marked the most steals in a single game by a Dukes player under Head Coach Dan Burt.
ALL-TIME WINS RECORD
  • Dan Burt is two wins away from tying and three wins away from breaking the all-time wins record at Duquesne. 
  • Dan Burkin (1994-2007) has the record with 176 wins. 
  • Burt currently sits at 174 wins.

  • The Dukes have at least 14 assists in six of seven games this year and rank second in the A-10 with an assist/turnover ratio of 1.16.
  • Duquesne had 22 assists against Siena on Nov. 22, the most this season and most since the 21-22 season-high of 24 against St. Bonaventure on Feb. 20, 2022. 
  • Megan McConnell leads the team with 5.1 assists per game, which ranks second in the conference.
