PREVIEW: Duquesne Opens Season Against Point Park

The Dukes open the 2022-23 season at home against Point Park at 6:00 P.M. ET on Monday night.

Duquesne is 6-3 in home openers since 2013-14 and 6-1 in the past seven years. This is the first time the Dukes open the season at home since 2019-20 against Kent State.

THE SERIES - vs. POINT PARK
  • The Dukes and Pioneers are meeting for the 13th time and first time since 1986.
  • The Dukes are 12-1 all-time against Point Park and have won the past eight matchups.
  • Duquesne won the first four matchups before suffering its only loss against Point Park on Feb. 3, 1981 by a score of 61-69.
  • The first-ever meeting between these teams was on Jan. 23, 1979. Duquesne won, 74-40.
  • The last five Duquesne home games in the series were played at the legendary Civic Arena.
LAST MEETING - Dec. 2, 1986
  • The Dukes and Pioneers met for the 13th time at the Civic Arena in downtown Pittsburgh on Dec. 2, 1986.
  • It wasn't a particularly close game, as Duquesne ran away with this one, 78-42 in its home opener.
  • Maureen Major led the Dukes with 18 points, four steals and eight rebounds.
  • Jackie Fleischer had 14 points for the Dukes.
SCOUTING POINT PARK
  • Point Park is a D-II member of the NAIA in the River States Conference.
  • Duquesne and Point Park are located about a mile away from each other in downtown Pittsburgh. You can walk from campus to campus in about 15 minutes.
  • The Pioneers are currently 2-0 with their first two wins coming on the road at Wilberforce and Penn State Greater Allegheny.
  • Point Park is averaging 94 points per game so far.
  • The Pioneers went 14-11 overall and 7-9 in conference play last season.
  • Point Park averaged 71.2 points per game in 21-22. It ranked 6th in NAIA D-II with 47.1 rebounds per game.
  • Senior guard Michelle Burns led the Pioneers with 19.5 PPG last season, but she will not return. Senior forward Taylor Rinn will return though, and she averaged 15.9 PPG last season, the second-most on the team.
  • Rinn was selected to the RSC Women's Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • The Pioneers were picked to finish in ninth-place overall in the conference, and fourth in the East Divison.
  • Point Park is led by first-year head coach Dave Scarborough. He comes to Point Park with over a decade of coaching experience with stops at St. Peter's, Sacred Heart and Mount St. Mary's.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Duquesne's season ended in the first round of the A-10 Championship last season. It fell to Saint Joseph's, 65-49.
  • Tess Myers led the Dukes with 15 points on 5-15 shooting.
  • Precious Johnson led the team with eight rebounds and also put up 11 points.
  • Duquesne shot just 27.1% from the field.
  • The difference ended up being points in the point, with Saint Joseph's holding the advantage there at 34-16.
ALL-TIME WINS RECORD
  • Dan Burt being seven wins away from tying and eight wins away from breaking the all-time wins record at Duquesne.
  • Dan Burkin (1994-2007) has the record with 176 wins.
  • Burt currently sits at 169 wins.
PRESEASON HONORS
  • Sophomore Tess Myers earned a spot on the 2022 A-10 Preseason All-Conference Third Team, as announced by the league during its media day on Oct. 18.
  • Sophomore Megan McConnell was selected to the 2022 A-10 Preseason All-Defensive Team after leading the conference with 2.6 steals per game in 2021-22.
  • In the coaches poll, Duquesne was picked to finish in ninth-place for the second-straight season.
STAT CHECK
  • Tess Myers led the A-10 and ranked eighth in the country with 3.10 three-pointers per game. Her 90 total threes also led the conference and ranked 14th in the nation. She led the Dukes in scoring at 12.7 PPG last season.
  • Megan McConnell led the A-10 and ranked 27th nationally with 2.62 steals per game. She also ranked 38th in the nation with a 2.09 assist/turnover ratio. Her 119 assists ranked fifth in the A-10.
  • Transfer Ayanna Townsend led Xavier in blocks for third-straight season in 21-22 with 21. Her .473 FG% ranked 12th in the Big East and led the Musketeers.
  • Precious Johnson ranked fifth in the A-10 with 1.10 blocked shots per game.
A-10 ELITE
  • Since taking over as head coach in 2013-14, Dan Burt has led the Dukes to 169 wins. Only Dayton (192) and Fordham (182) have amassed more wins during that span among A-10 teams.
  • The Dukes are also one of four Atlantic 10 programs to post a winning season in at least seven of the past nine seasons (Dayton, Fordham, & VCU). Duquesne is also tied for the third-most A-10 wins (86) since Burt took over as head coach.
  • Since 2013-14, the Dukes have led the Atlantic 10 in scoring offense (2x), scoring margin, field goal percentage (2x), free throw percentage and assists per game (3x).
  • Duquesne has ranked at least fifth in the conference in points per game, field goal percentage and assists per game in all but one season since 2014-15.
RAINING TREYS
  • Last year's team made 214 three-pointers, which is tied for the fifth-most in Duquesne history.
  • Duquesne also established a program-record when it converted 19 three pointers in their 99-75 win at St. Bonaventure on Feb. 20, 2022.
  • The team smashed the previous school-record of 14 which was set in games against Akron (12/4/19) and La Salle (2/25/09).
  • The total also tied the Atlantic 10 record which was established by Dayton on Jan. 4, 2018.
  • The Dukes finished the day 19 of 33 (57.6 percent) from beyond-the-arc and made eight of their last nine attempts in the contest.
  • Duquesne finished third in the A-10 last season with 7.4 three-point field goals per game.
NEWCOMERS
  • Junior forward Ayanna Townsend is back home after transferring from Xavier. She was a team captain and averaged 9.1 ppg and 5.5 rpg last season. She has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
  • Redshirt freshman center Selma Kulo comes to Pittsburgh after two season at Western Kentucky. She led the team with 21 blocks and has three years of eligibility remaining.
  • Sophomore guard Naelle Bernard is a transfer from Salt Lake City C.C. with three seasons of eligibility remaining. She led Salt Lake City with 9.0 ppg last season.
  • Sophomore forward Kaitlyn Ammons appeared in 12 games as a freshman at DePaul last season. She was ranked the No. 1 prospect out of West Virginia and the No. 79 recruit nationall in the class of 2021.
  • Freshman guard Reilly Sunday is from the local Moon Area High School and earned All-State Honors while leading her team to the PIAA Class 5A quarterfinals last season.
  • Freshman guard Dea Pushkolli is from Kosovo but spent the last three seasons playing in the U.S.
LOCAL PRODUCTS
  • The Dukes have seven girls from the Pittsburgh region, plus another from Wana, W. Va., which is about 70 miles away from Duquesne.
  • The seven high schools that the Pennsylvania players are from - Ambridge, Chartiers Valley, Moon, Mars, Bethel Park, North Catholic and Winchester Thurston - are all WPIAL schools.
HOME COURT ADVANTAGE
  • Since taking over as head coach in the 2013-14 season, Dan Burt has led the Dukes to a 87-38 record in home games.
  • Not including the shortened 2020-21 season (only five home games), the Dukes haven't had a losing record at home since 2006-07 and never have under Burt.
  • The Dukes went 8-7 at home last season in their first full season at the upgraded UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
  • Duquesne had a +3.7 points margin at home compared to a -4.6 points margin on the road.
ETCHING HER NAME INTO THE RECORD BOOK
  • Tess Myers had one of the greatest three-point shooting single seasons in Duquesne history last year.
  • Her 90 three-point field goals were the second-most in the single-season at Duquesne, trailing only the record-holder Chassidy Omogrosso (92 - 2018).
  • Her 230 attempts were also the second-most in a single season.
  • April Robinson holds that mark with 247 attempted in 2016.
  • She will break into the top-10 in all-time three-pointers made in Duquesne history with 23 this season.
PLAYING LIKE A MCCONNELL
  • In addition to rebounds, Megan McConnell led the team in both assists (4.1) and steals (2.6) per game.
  • McConnell recorded a career-high eight steals versus George Washington on Feb. 9, 2022.
  • It marked the most steals in a single game by a Dukes player under Head Coach Dan Burt.
