PREVIEW: CITY GAME - Duquesne at Pitt

Duquesne and Pitt are set to meet for the 42nd time on Saturday at 6:00 P.M. ET at the Peterson Events Center.

THE SERIES - vs. PITT
  • The Dukes and Panthers have met 41 times, with Pitt winning 24 of those.
  • Duquesne has dominated the rivalry in recent years, winning nine of the last 12 matchups.
  • Pitt won last year's game 69-64 at Duquesne.
  • The 41 meetings make Pitt Duquesne's fourth most common non-conference opponent in program history.
  • The first matchup took place in 1974 and the two teams have played for 37-straight seasons.
LAST MEETING - Nov. 20, 2021
  • Pitt beat Duquesne at the UPMC Cooper FIeldhouse last year, 69-64.
  • Jayla Everett led the way for Pitt with 18 points while Fatou Pouye paced Duquesne with 17 points.
  • Duquesne led going into the fourth, but Pitt outscored them 21-14 in the final frame to win.
  • Duquesne returns just four of the players that played in that game.
  • Pitt brings back eight players from last year's matchup.
SCOUTING PITT
  • Pitt is 3-0, same as Duquesne, and is coming off a 93-54 blowout win over Bryant Thursday.
  • The Panthers beat George Mason and Fairfield fairly easily in their first two games.
  • Pitt returns 70.2% of its scoring and 71.9% of its rebounding from a season ago.
  • Pitt added two graduate transfers in Gabby Hutcherson (Ohio State) and Channise Lewis (Maryland) while signing three freshmen in Marley Washenitz, Aislin Malcolm and Avery Strickland.
  • The Panthers were picked to finish in last place in the ACC this year.
  • Pitt is led by head coach Lance White. He is in his fifth year at Pitt and has an overall record of 35-79.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Duquesne ran away with its last game against Manhattan at home, winning 67-46.
  • The Dukes handled the Jaspers, who were picked to finish second in their conference, even gathering three first-place votes.
  • Ayanna Townsend led Duquesne with 15 points and seven rebounds on 6-11 shooting.
  • Tess Myers hit a trio of threes while Naelle Bernard and Lauren Wasylson hit a couple each.
  • Megan McConnell had nine points on 4-6 shooting and led the team with six assists.
  • Duquesne shots 42.4% as a team while holding Manhattan to only 25.8% shooting.
STAT CHECK
  • Tess Myers leads the A-10 and ranks 21st in the country with 3.33 three-pointers per game this season. Her 10 three-pointers made are top-32 nationally. Her 90 total threes last season led the conference and ranked 14th in the nation.
  • Megan McConnell has 19 assists through three games, which ranks 31st nationally and second in the conference. She is also one of of only three players in the country with a triple-double this season.
  • The Dukes lead the A-10 in blocks per game (5.7), field goal % defense (29.1), rebounds per game (47.7), scoring margin (+25.3) and scoring offense (79.3).
LOCK DOWN D
  • Duquesne ranks 17th in the country and first in the conference in field goal percentage defense, with opposing teams shooting just 29.1 percent.
  • The Dukes' scoring defense ranks third in the conference as opposing teams have scored just 54 points per game.
  • The Dukes held opponents to under 50 points five times last season and won eight games by double digits. They have achieved that twice already this year.
  • Duquesne held an opponent to under 50 points just once during the previous 2020-21 season (George Mason) and did not win any games in 2020-21 by double digits.
  • The 44 points allowed by Duquesne in its win versus St. Bonaventure last year was the fewest points yielded by the squad since the Dukes limited the Bonnies to 39 on Jan. 30, 2020.
OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER
  • In the first game of the year, Duquesne put up 94 points and showed off the fast and furious offense that head coach Dan Burt has been talking about.
  • Through three games, Duquesne leads the A-10 in scoring offense (79.3 PPG) and scoring margin (+25.3).
  • The Dukes are shooting 43.5% from the field which is the fourth-best in the conference.
  • With four of their top six leading scorers from last year back, the Dukes have an offensive core ready to put up points this year.
GUARDS ON THE GLASS
  • Megan McConnell leads the team and ranks fourth in the conference with 9.3 rebounds per game, the highest among all guards in the conference.
  • She led the team with 6.4 rebounds per game last season, which ranked 10th in the conference.
  • McConnell hauled in at least five rebounds in 22 games last season.
  • She had five games with 10 or more rebounds last season, including a career-high 13 in the win over Lafayette on Nov. 14.
  • Tess Myers brought in five or more rebounds in seven of the last 16 games last year and averaged 3.9 rebounds per game, the fourth-highest on the squad.
PLAYING LIKE A MCCONNELL
  • In addition to rebounds, Megan McConnell leads the team in steals per game (3.0) and assists per game (6.3).
  • Last year led the team in both assists (4.1) and steals (2.6) per game.
  • She has nine steals already and recorded five in the season opener.
  • McConnell recorded a career-high eight steals versus George Washington on Feb. 9, 2022.
  • It marked the most steals in a single game by a Dukes player under Head Coach Dan Burt.
