CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Duquesne men's tennis team began its spring break trip with a 4-2 victory over conference foe Davidson on Tuesday at the LTP Daniel Island Tennis Center in Charleston, South Carolina. Jared Isaacs became Duquesne's all-time singles wins leader with 77 victories in the win. He also tied the program's total wins record with his 146th career victory.
The doubles point saw a familiar lineup as of late. Dominic Lea and Isaacs were first off the court falling at #2 doubles. Alejandro Rodriquez-Vidal and Alex Mascioli were next off the court, winning their match at the top spot. Finally, Graham Conron and Joey Matthews played a very close set but ended up dropping the #3 doubles match by a score of 7-6.
With the Dukes down 1-0, Duquesne needed to respond in singles.
Rodriguez-Vidal played some of his best tennis of the season making quick work of his opponent at #2 singles. Mascioli then earned a solid win playing at the top spot again this year.
Duquesne needed two more points to seal the victory and one of those points came from senior Isaacs. Isaacs saved a couple match points late in the second set to make a comeback win and put the Dukes within one point from a win. The historic victory lifted Isaacs to his 77th singles victory.
Senior Dominic Lea and freshman Jin Dassanayake needed to win one of the final two singles matches to secure the team victory. Lea was able to close out his match with a close second-set battle to seal the victory for Duquesne.
"I am very proud of how the guys fought on and off the court," said Duquesne associate head coach Hunter Callahan. "This win was a total team effort and I am extremely happy for the guys. This proves we are able to compete at the top of this conference when we play as a team."
The Dukes battle the College of Charleston in non-conference action on Friday, March 6th in their final dual-match of spring break.
