TOLEDO, Ohio – The Duquesne women's tennis battled Toledo, Oakland and Saint Francis at the Rocket Invitational on Friday and Saturday at UT Varsity Courts and Twos Athletic Club.
Overall, Duquesne won five of six singles flights, posting an overall record of 15-5 in singles play. The Dukes posted a 4-5 record in doubles action. The tournament began outside at the UT Varsity Courts on Friday, but had to be moved to Twos Athletic Club on Saturday due to rain.
Natasha Novak (Tie, No. 2 Singles, 2-1),
Meredith Lee (No. 3 Singles, 3-0),
Margot Pessy (Tie, No. 4 Singles, 2-0)
Miranda Bishard (No. 5 Singles, 3-0) and
Priyanka Mitta (No. 6 Singles, 3-0) all won their singles flights.
Novak earned victories over Toledo's Eileen Carney (3-6, 6-2, 10-7) and Saint Francis' Lucia Seigford (5-7, 6-4, 10-6).
Pessy defeated Oakland's Nirva Patel (6-0, 6-1) and Toledo's Patricia Panta (6-4, 4-6, 10-7).
Bishard, who went undefeated in singles play, took wins against Oakland's Victoria Kurz (6-4, 6-2), Toledo's Laura Morera (6-1, 6-2) and Oakland's Chelsea Dzenga.
Mitta grabbed a pair of singles victories against Zina Mehikic (8-5) and Oakland's Dezenga (6-2, 6-2).
Doubles partners Mitta and Lee both went, 2-1, on the weekend, defeating Oakland's Samantha Galloway and Dzenga (6-4) and Saint Francis' Romina Cutipa and Kristen Lucas (6-2). Â
Pessy and Dainella Latoni teamed up to take down Toledo's Panta and Mehikic (6-3).
Latoni posted another doubles win with Laurel Shymnasky, as the duo took down Toledo's Anouk Ma-Ajong and Mehikic (6-2).
Duquesne is back in action Oct. 25 through Oct. 29 at the ITA Atlantic Regionals. Select Dukes will make the trek to Blacksburg, Va. on campus of Virginia Tech.
