PREVIEW: @DuqMSoccer Hosts Saint Francis U

Dukes back in action for first time since Sept. 2 win over Detroit Mercy

Duquesne (1-2), which has been idle since its 3-0 win over Detroit Mercy on Sept. 2, returns to action to host Saint Francis U (2-2) at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12 on Rooney Field. The SFU game is the third of five in a row at home for the Dukes. Admission for Wednesday night's game is free.

THE SERIES VS. SAINT FRANCIS U
  • This is the 18th meeting between the Dukes and Red Flash.
  • Duquesne leads the series 7-6-4, including a 4-2-2 advantage in matches on Rooney Field.
  • In the last meeting between the two, SFU rallied from a 2-0 first half deficit to defeat DU 4-2 in the 2017 season opener for both teams at SFU's Stokes Soccerplex (Aug. 25, 2017).
  • DU has won the past two on Rooney Field. SFU's last win at Duquesne was on Sept. 1, 2010 by a 2-0 score.
  • Head coach Chase Brooks is 3-2 vs. the Red Flash at Duquesne.

QUICK HITS
  • Duquesne is in its sixth season under head coach Chase Brooks. Brooks has led the Dukes to three Atlantic 10 Conference tournament appearances (2013, 2015 & 2016).
  • The Dukes are 16-6-1 in nonconference home games under Brooks (49-21-9 all-time).
  • DU is 1-1 at home in 2018 with a 2-1 overtime loss to Northern Kentucky and a 3-0 win over Detroit Mercy.
  • The three goals vs. UDM were Duquesne's most since a 3-1 win over La Salle on Sept. 30 of last season (a span of 10 games).
  • The shutout was DU's first since a 5-0 win over Bloomsburg on Aug. 27 of last season.
  • Saint Francis U is 2-2 on the young season with a neutral-site win over Texas Rio Grande Valley (1-0) and home win over Bucknell (2-0). Both Red Flash losses have come in overtime on the road (0-1 at Houston Baptist and 2-3 at NJIT). SFU's match on Sunday vs. Canisius was cancelled due to a torrential weekend downpour that made the Red Flash's Stokes Soccerplex unplayable.
  • The Dukes, who have started at least six freshmen in all three games this season, have started seven freshmen in their two most-recent matches: Manel Busquets, Nathan Dossantos, Rob Dymond, Moritz Kappelsberger, Domenic Nascimben, Kendall Newman, Gylfi Stefansson and Eric Zech have all started at least once. Of the eight freshmen who have started, seven are international players.
  • Busquets, who leads the team with four points, has a goal (vs. Northern Kentucky) and pair of assists (Detroit Mercy) in DU's past two games.
  • Nascimben, starting in place of Robbie McKelvey who received a red card vs. Northern Kentucky, stopped six shots in recording a 3-0 shutout win over Detroit Mercy in his first career start.
  • Sophomore Zion Beaton recorded his first career goal and assist in the win over Detroit Mercy.
  • The Dukes return six starters in junior forward Zach Hall (17 games/17 starts), junior defender/midfielder Ryan Landry (15/14), senior defender/midfielder Ian Larson (15/15), senior midfielder Noah Mehta (10/10), senior midfielder Austin Stout (17/17) and junior goalkeeper Robbie McKelvey (15/15, 1,280 minutes).
  • Hall (13 points, 5 goals) and Larson (11 points, 4 goals) are DU's top returning point-getters and goal scorers.
  • Landry (4), Hall (3) and Larson (3) led returnees in assists last season.
  • Hall leads the team in career goals with five and career starts with 35. Mehta leads the team in career games with 48.
  • The Dukes have 15 first-year players on the 2018 roster including 14 freshmen and junior Pitt transfer M Alec Anselmo. Anselmo played in 30 matches with 16 starts in two seasons with the Panthers.
  • Of the 15 newcomers, eight are international players: F Manel Busquets (Spain), M/F Denis Celik (Germany), D/M Nathan Dossantos (Canada), D/M Rob Dymond (New Zealand), D Moritz Kappelsberger (Germany), GK Dominic Nascimben (Australia), M/F Gylfi Stefansson (Iceland) and F Eric Zech (Germany).
