Duquesne's lacrosse team got four goals from Kaelin Shaw and a pair from Jill Vacanti in defeating visiting VCU, 12-10 Friday afternoon at Rooney Field. The Dukes improved to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play while VCU fell to 2-9, 0-3.
Duquesne held an early 2-1 lead before VCU tallied four straight scores for a 5-2 lead. The Rams equaled the games biggest lead of the contest at 6-3 prior to DU scoring five of the next six goals to make it 8-7 Dukes with 8:50 left in the first half. After five scoreless minutes, VCU found the back of the net at the 4:38 mark for the final goal of the half and an 8-8 tie.
Goals by Shaw and Kaitlyn DeHaven to open the second frame gave DU its largest advantage at 12-10 before VCU knotted the game at 10 apiece mid-way through the second stanza. Shaw and Vacanti though managed the final two goals of the day for the final result.
Tess Drotar had a goal and game highs of three ground balls and three draw controls while Macy Marafioti had a goal, two assists, three ground balls and a game-high two caused turnovers. Haley Matthai chipped in a goal, an assist and a ground ball. Jenna Bishop made six saves in goal.
The Dukes return to action on Sunday, April 10 as they host Richmond at noon on Rooney Field.
