Duquesne's lacrosse team improved to 3-1 in Atlantic 10 play Sunday afternoon with a dramatic, come from behind, 7-6 overtime triumph over visiting Richmond. The Dukes improved to 5-6 overall while the Spiders fell to 5-6 and 1-3 in Atlantic 10 play.
Under frigid conditions with wind chills in the 20's, Sarah Kollhoff got the Dukes on the board first six minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead. After over 12 scoreless minutes, the Dukes scored again as Tess Drotar found the net off a Jill Vacanti assist for a 2-0 advantage.
Richmond, however scored the next three goals to take a 3-2 lead with 2:47 left in the half before Macy Marafioti scored with 1:46 remaining to make it 3-3 at the half.
Richmond opened the second frame by scoring the first three goals for a 6-3 lead at the 18:06 mark until Vacanti scored with 10:20 on the clock to make it 6-4. The Spiders controlled the clock until the Dukes forced a turnover and Drotar scored her second goal to make it 6-5 with 3:09 left in regulation. DU won the ensuing draw and Haley Matthai scored off a Kaelin Shaw assist with 2:13 left to tie the game and send it into overtime.
The Red and Blue won the overtime draw, called a timeout and Vacanti tallied the game-winner 2:05 into the extra frame for the 7-6 final score.
Jenna Bishop equaled her career high with 16 saves while Meredith Micho had a game-high four ground balls.
The Dukes return to action on Friday, April 15 as they travel to Saint Joseph's for a 4:00 pm game.
