PITTSBURGH - Duquesne placed three bowlers among the top six in going 9-5 at the Virginia Union Invitational over the weekend. The Dukes placed sixth of 14 teams in baker and traditional play and went 1-1 for a sixth-place finish in Sunday's tournament games.
Duquesne had the third highest team average (182.1) behind only first place 23rd-ranked Norfolk State (183.8) and second place 20th-ranked St. Francis Brooklyn (183.6). The Dukes led the entire field during the traditional matches on day 2 shooting 5540 over six games for a 184.66 average.
Cassidy Powers finished third overall with a 197.17 average. Powers was consistent all weekend with no score below 177 in amassing a 1,183 pin total. Kelsey Hackbart, who rolled 213, 203 and 232 in her first three games, finished fourth with a 1,180 pin total. Megan Cook, who had the top individual score of the weekend -- a 236 against Coppin State -- was sixth with a 1,156 total. Lauren Mayberry, who had games of 223 and 214, finished 12th at 1,113. DU's fifth bowler, Janae Haller, was 57th with an 888 total.
Powers, Hackbart and Cook were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
"Overall it was a great weekend and the team gained valuable experience bowling in such close matches," said head coach Jody Fetterhoff. "All but one of the losses, we were in a position to win going into the last game. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it done this tournament but we will get better as they gain more experience bowling in these types of situations."
