Oct. 17, 2016 PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne women's bowling team made its debut at the Bud Whitman Memorial in Reading, Pa. over the weekend, finishing eighth of 18 teams on Sunday.
The Dukes went 7-3 with a 922-775 win over Kutztown, who was ranked No. 17 in the National Tenpin Coaches Association Poll and a 999-943 victory over Franklin Pierce who was among those also receiving votes in the NTCA poll. Two of the Dukes' losses were to No. 12 Delaware State and No. 19 Adelphi.
Kelsey Hackbart earned a spot on Sunday's All-Tournament Team with a fourth place overall finish. Hackbart knocked down 1,065 pins for a 213 average. Her pin total was just five shy of second place. Lauren Mayberry (967, 193.4 avg.) and Cassidy Powers (946, 189.2 avg.) also placed in the top 30 finishing 18th and 27th respectively.
Mayberry had the honor of rolling the first ball in school history to start Saturday's Baker game competition.
"Overall it was a great weekend for our team," said head coach Jody Fetterhoff. "While we were late with our adjustments on Saturday, we went into Sunday with confidence, knowing that if we make those adjustments sooner, we were going to do a lot better and it showed. I'm very impressed with how this young team responded knowing that we were going to be bowling on the same pattern as the day before. We could've easily had similar results as on Saturday but they were determined to figure it out and do better. When one person struggled, another person stepped up. It was a total team effort and I look forward to watching this team grow throughout the season."
