PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne women's basketball team's program record 15-game winning streak and 19-game home winning streak came to an end Sunday afternoon after a 70-52 loss to -/RV George Washington. The game was televised nationally on ESPNU.
The Dukes (16-2, 4-1 A-10) suffer their first conference loss of the season while GW (15-3, 5-0 A-10) won their 10th straight contest.
Duquesne was led by Deva'Nyar Workman who scored a team-high 21. Kadri-Ann Lass added 13.
GW's Jonquel Jones, the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week, recorded her 15th double-double of the season with game-highs of 23 points and 18 rebounds. Hannah Schaible added 14 points and 12 boards for GW. Jones had seven of George Washington's 11 blocks.
The 1st quarter was close with three ties and three lead changes. Trailing 7-4 after four minutes of play, the Dukes got back-to-back 3-pointers from Workman and Lass which gave the Dukes a 10-7 lead heading into the media timeout. The game would remain tight as the Colonials led 14-13 at the end of the quarter.
GW opened up the 2nd quarter by scoring the first five points to take a 19-13 lead. The Colonials would stretch their lead to eight points after a Jones jumper at 7:36. Duquesne would respond with a 7-2 run over the next 2:51 to cut the George Washington lead to 25-22 at 3:23. The Colonials would hold the lead the rest of the quarter taking a 31-24 advantage into halftime.
Schaible's 3-pointer at 8:28 of the 3rd quarter gave GW their first double-digit lead of the game at 36-26. The lead would reach 21 points on Ciara Washington's layup before the media timeout. The Colonials would hold a 54-38 advantage at the end of the quarter.
A Chassidy Omogrosso 3-pointer early in the 4th quarter cut the deficit to 13 points at 54-41, but this was as close as Duquesne would get. The Colonials lead would reach 23 points at the 3:30 mark.
George Washington dominated on the boards 55-37 and 22-12 on the offensive end. The Colonials also outscored the Dukes in the paint 36-20.
Duquesne is off this week and will hit the floor next on Saturday afternoon when they host St. Bonaventure (16-2, 5-0 A-10). SBU is coming off a 70-55 win over George Mason on Saturday and plays at Dayton on Wednesday.
