June 8, 2015 PITTSBURGH - Duquesne head women's soccer coach Al Alvine has announced the team's 2015 schedule. The 2015 season marks the 20th year of Division I soccer on the Bluff which started in 1995.
The season begins at Rooney Field with the 2nd annual Steel City Classic on Aug. 21st and 23rd. In addition to the Dukes, Robert Morris, Saint Francis U and Pittsburgh will participate. On the first day, the Panthers and Red Flash will start things off before the Dukes and Colonials close out the evening. On the final day, Pitt and RMU will play the first game followed by Duquesne and SFU.
The first road game of the season takes the Dukes to Morgantown to face West Virginia on Aug. 30th. The Mountaineers (16-2-4, 7-0-1), were the 2014 Big 12 Conference regular-season and tournament champions. Last season, Duquesne played level with #22 WVU for 68 minutes and led for over four minutes before falling 4-1.
The next two games will be played in New Jersey. On Sept. 4th, Duquesne will play their first-ever match against Seton Hall. This will be the first match against a Big East team since 2012 when the Dukes defeated Xavier 2-0 when the Musketeers were a member of the Atlantic 10. Sept. 6th Duquesne plays at Princeton. The Tigers are also a first-time opponent for Duquesne who, have never played an Ivy League opponent in since the program's inception.
Duquesne returns home for a pair of matches beginning Sept. 11th against UC Santa Barbara. Last season the Dukes made their first-ever trip to Santa Barbara and the Gauchos were Duquesne's first Big West Conference opponent since 2001. On Sept. 13th, the Dukes host Cincinnati. This is first-ever match with the Bearcats and also marks the first-ever opponent in the American Athletic Conference (Duquesne last played former A-10 member and current AAC member Temple in 2012).
The Dukes return to the state of Michigan on Sept. 20th when they visit Oakland. This marks the first time that Duquesne has played in the Great Lake State since 2011 when the Dukes faced both Michigan and Michigan State.
In-state rival Bucknell comes to Rooney Field on Sept. 22nd. The Dukes have a two-match winning streak against the Bison dating back to 2009.
Atlantic 10 competition begins on Oct. 1st when Duquesne travels to Richmond. Last season, Maddie Layman scored both of the Dukes' goal in their 2-2 draw with the Spiders.
The first A-10 road matchup is at VCU on Oct. 4th. This will be Duquesne's first-ever trip to VCU, who joined the A-10 in 2013. The two schools met in 1999 in Morgantown and in 2013 on Rooney Field, splitting the two decisions. The Dukes remain at home for an Oct. 8th match against long-time rival St. Bonaventure. Duquesne owns more Atlantic 10 victories over SBU than another school. Their 11 wins is the second-most against any opponent (Robert Morris 12).
On Oct. 11th, the Dukes play at Davidson for the first time as an Atlantic 10 opponent. Emma Coccia's goal in overtime lifted Duquesne to a 1-0 overtime win last season at Rooney Field. The match will make the first since 2000 that the Dukes and Wildcats have squared off at Alumni Soccer Stadium.
Duquesne returns home for an Oct. 15th match against George Mason. The Dukes and Patriots met for the first-ever time last season, a 2-1 DUQ victory.
The first of two Philadelphia road trips happens on Oct. 18th when the Dukes face Saint Joseph's. The Dukes are looking for their first over the Hawks since 2007.
The final two home matches are Oct. 22nd against Massachusetts and Oct. 25th against Rhode Island. Last season, the Dukes fired 16 shots at UMass but couldn't score. The follow match, they dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 double-overtime decision to Rhode Island at Rooney Field with 52 seconds left in double overtime.
The regular season ends with two teams that represented the conference at the 2014 NCAA Championship - at Dayton on Oct. 29th and at La Salle on Nov. 1st. UD won the A-10 Championship last season and holds a 15-1-0 record all-time against Duquesne. La Salle is coming off a perfect 8-0-0 A-10 season and has not lost to Duquesne in Philadelphia since 2004.
The 2015 Atlantic 10 Championship will be hosted by Davidson and will take place beginning on Nov. 5th. The top eight school will qualify for the single-elimination tournament.
