PITTSBURGH - April Robinson scored a game-high 24 points and Chassidy Omogrosso tied a career-high with 18 points as the Duquesne women's basketball team set a program record with their 11th straight victory in their 79-65 win over Pittsburgh in the City Game at the Petersen Events Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Deva'Nyar Workman recorded a double-double of 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for the Dukes who improve to 12-1 on the season. Kadri-Ann Lass added four blocks.
Kalista Walters scored 22 and Brenna Wise for the Panthers (8-5).
The game started off slow, with both teams missing their first five shots. Emilie Gronas had the first field of the game at the 6:54 mark of the 1st quarter. She would follow with a 3-pointer on the next possession to give Duquesne their first lead of the game at 5-3. The teams would exchange the lead one more time until Robinson's 3-pointer started a started a 14-3 run giving the Dukes a 22-11 lead with 35 seconds remaining.
Angela Staffileno's layup at 7:02 of the 2nd quarter gave the Dukes their first double-digit lead of the game at 28-18. The Panthers would cut the deficit to four points at 30-26 with 4:16 to play, but the Dukes would close out the quarter on a 15-4 run to take a 45-30 lead into halftime.
The Dukes opened the 3rd quarter by scoring the first six points and extending their lead to 21 points at 51-30 after a Gronas 3-pointer. Duquesne would hold a 20-point lead for 5:54 of the final 6:19 of the quarter, taking a 66-46 lead into the 4th quarter.
Pitt started off the final quarter on an 11-1 run to make the score 67-57 at the midway point. A Stasha Carey 3-pointer at 4:27 made it a single-digit contest at 69-60, but Omogrosso answered with a 3-pointer to put Duquesne ahead 72-60 with 4:12 remaining. Robinson's 3-pointer with 57 seconds sealed the game making the score 77-65.
The Dukes shot 40.0 percent, making 26 of their 65 shots and shot 9-of-21 from beyond-the-arc for 42.9 percent. This is the third time in the last four games Duquesne has shot over 40 percent from 3-point range. Duquesne scored 26 points off of 21 Pitt turnovers.
Duquesne, who is off to their best start in program history, begin Atlantic 10 Conference play on January 3rd against Dayton (7-3).
