EASTON, Pa. - Four players scored in double-figures to lead the Duquesne women's basketball team to a 73-65 victory at Lafayette on Friday evening.
April Robinson led all scorers with 24 points. Amadea Szamosi added 17, Kadri-Ann Lass 14 and Chassidy Omogrosso 11 for the Dukes who improve to 2-1 on the season. Szamosi had a game-high nine rebounds and Robinson a game-high six assists.
Jamie O'Hare led Lafayette (0-3) with 22 points.
Duquesne, who led from start-to-finish, scored the first five points of the game and after a 3-pointer by Omogrosso, led 10-2 at the 7:21 mark of the 1st quarter. A turnover by O'Hare led to a Szamosi basket at 2:46, giving the Dukes a 9-point lead at 21-12. A steal by Julijana Vojinovic resulted in a Robinson layup to close out the 1st quarter scoring with Duquesne ahead 23-16.
The Dukes got their first double-digit lead of the game on a Lass jumper that made the score 27-16 early in the 2nd quarter. An offensive rebound and putback by Lass with 5:20 to play in the quarter gave Duquesne its largest lead of the game, 14 points at 36-22. However, the Leopards would go on a 13-4 run to end the quarter and cut the deficit to five points at 40-35 heading into halftime.
An early 3rd quarter layup by O'Hare made it a 1-possession game before an 11-2 run by the Dukes increased their lead to 12 points at 51-39. Lafayette scored the next five points before an Omogrosso layup made the score 53-44 at the end of the quarter.
Duquesne would hold a 10-point lead at 63-53 midway through the 4th quarter. The Leopards got within six point at 68-61 with under a minute remaining, but Robinson made six straight free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
"With a very young team, we are finding ways to win, but we have to get better at shot selection, running out sets, and defending correctly," said head coach Dan Burt.
"Kudos to Lafayette for playing well. They played hard, hit shots and represented their Hall of Fame coach [Theresa Grentz] well."
The Leopards outrebounded the Dukes 38-34.
"Our posts scored the ball well. We were very happy with Amadea and Kadri's play tonight," added Burt.
Duquesne made 31-of-61 shots for 51 percent, assisting on 18 of those field goals. Their defense forced 18 Leopards turnovers resulting in 24 points.
Duquesne's next game is the home opener against Howard (0-3) on Tuesday, Nov. 24.
