OLEAN, N.Y. - The Duquesne women's basketball team led from beginning-to-end in their 76-63 victory over long-time rival St. Bonaventure at the Reilly Center on Wednesday night.
April Robinson scored 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Deva'Nyar Workman added 16 off the bench. Belma Nurkic, Amadea Szamosi and Jose-Ann Johnson scored in double-figure with 11, 11 and 10 points respectively. Olivia Bresnahan set a Duquesne-high and tied her career-best with eight rebounds. Workman also pulled down eight boards. With the victory, the Dukes improve to 13-8 overall and 5-3 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
SBU's Katie Healy scored a game-high 25. Hannah Little added 12 off the bench for the Bonnies (11-10, 1-7 A-10) who drop their seventh straight contest.
Duquesne's defense started off strong in the 1st half, forcing seven straight St. Bonaventure empty possessions - three turnovers and four missed shots. Bresnahan's off-balance 3-pointer as the shot clock expired gave the Dukes a 7-0 lead before the first media timeout. The Bonnies did not get their first points until a pair of Healy foul shots at 14:53, which made the score 11-2 That was the beginning of a 9-2 run that made the score 13-9 at the 12:57 mark. A pair of free throws by Workman with 2:57 left gave the Dukes a 7-point lead with 2:44 left. Duquesne would still maintain a 7-point lead until Little fought through traffic to score with 5 seconds remaining, but it was Robinson who ended the 1st half scoring by banking in a shot from the half court line to send the game into halftime with the Dukes ahead 32-24.
Nurkic's 3-pointer at 19:09 gave the Dukes its first 10-point lead of the 2nd half at 36-26. The lead would reach 13 points after a Robinson 3-pointer at 18:01. Richmond's and-1 got SBU within eight points at 49-41 at 12:46, but Duquesne responded with a Robinson 3-pointer and a Nurkic fast break to regain the 13-point lead with 11:41 remaining. However, the Bonnies would go on an 11-3 run to cut the deficit to five points at 57-52 at the under-8 media timeout. This would be as close as St. Bonaventure would get as the Dukes would make seven on their next eight free throws to open another double-digit lead with 4:13 left at 67-57.
"I'm very happy with how we played. To have five players score in double-figures is a testament to our inside/outside balance," said head coach Dan Burt.
"We won the glass with a +15 and got to the line over 30 times, making 80 percent. That helps tremendously in one of the toughest venues to play in the A-10. This is a good, quality conference road win."
Duquesne out-rebounded St. Bonaventure 44-29 and made 25-of-31 from the foul line.
"Belma hit big shots for us tonight. Dev grabbed rebounds at critical times. Jose-Ann hit important free throws down the stretch. Liv defended and rebounded very well."
After returning to Pittsburgh, the Dukes will pack their bags again to take on Fordham (15-6, 7-1 A-10) at Rose Hill Gym. The Rams were 66-45 winners over Davidson earlier tonight.
