PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne women's basketball team improved to 12-6 overall and 4-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference after defeating Massachusetts 67-52 on Wednesday night.
Raegan Moore led the Dukes with 17 points. Wumi Agunbiade recorded a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Olivia Bresnahan added 11 and Amadea Szamosi 9 for the Dukes who have won three straight games.
The Minutewomen (3-15, 0-4 A-10) were led by Kim Pierre-Louis who scored 17 off the bench.
The Dukes jumped all over the Minutewomen from the start, getting out to an early 10-2 lead at the first media timeout behind a pair of 3-pointers from Moore. On the next possession, Duquesne forced a Massachusetts turnover which led to a pair of Bresnahan foul shots, giving the Dukes its first 10-point lead of the game at 12-2 with 15:39 remaining in the half.
At the 9:35 mark of the half, UMass committed its seventh foul of the half, which put Duquesne in the 1-and-1 which started a 16-6 run over the next five minutes. A Moore and-1 at the 4:16 mark of the half gave Duquesne its largest lead of the half - 17 points at 32-15.
The Minutewomen ended the half by scoring the final six points as the Dukes took a 10-point lead into halftime, 35-25.
A pair of Moore foul shots at the 12:49 mark of the 2nd half put the Dukes at the 50 point mark and increased their lead to 16 points. Amadea Szamosi's 3-pointer four minutes later stretched the Duquesne lead to 20 points at 58-38 with nine minutes remaining. The closest UMass would come to tying the game was 15 points with 1:09 left in the contest.
"We got contributions from alot of people tonight," said head coach Dan Burt. "From Raegan with 17 to Liv who went 5-for-6 from the line with five rebounds and four assists. Orsi did a fantastic job of defending and not to mention that Wumi had a double-double.Belma Nurkic really went unsung - she defended well and finished with seven points in just 21 minutes."
"Our assistant coach Matt Schmidt was really happy that we won the rebound battle. We did a nice job a blocking out and pursing the ball."
Duquesne out-rebounded UMass 35-27.
The Dukes remain at home and will host Rhode Island (6-11, 1-2 A-10) Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. This game is the Dukes' annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. A pre-game event for kids 8th grade and under begins at 12:30.
