Two Dukes Earn NEC Player of the Week Honors

Sept. 12, 2011

PITTSBURGH - Duquesne junior quarterback Sean Patterson (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) and junior punter/placekicker Charlie Leventry (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) earned Northeast Conference Football Player of the Week honors for their performances in Duquesne's 22-13 win at Dayton on Saturday.

The victory ended Dayton's FCS-best win streak at 10.

Patterson, who earned NEC Player of the Week honors twice last season, accounted for 310 yards of total offense as the Dukes defeated the Flyers for the second consecutive season. The junior quarterback completed 19-of-32 passes for 254 yards and a touchdown and rushed nine times for 56 yards in the road victory over a team that has won at least a share of the Pioneer League title in three of the past four seasons.

Patterson's 28-yard quarterback keeper set up a field goal that gave the Dukes their first lead of the game, 13-10, with 59 seconds remaining in the third quarter. He later completed passes of 9 and 13 yards to Isaac Spragg and added a 13-yard rush into Dayton territory on the game-winning drive that ended on Leventry's 24-yard field goal with 30 seconds to play.

Patterson also ran 18 yards for a first down and followed with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Connor Dixon on a scoring drive that pulled Duquesne even at 7-7 right before half.

Through two games, both on the road, Patterson is averaging a NEC-best 268.5 yards of total offense.

Leventry connected all three of his second-half attempts (3-of-4 for the game), including a game-winning 24 yarder with 30 seconds left, on his way to becoming the first Duquesne player to ever earn NEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Leventry hit a 40-yarder to pull the Dukes even at 10-10 midway through the third quarter and added a 28-yard kick to Duquesne its first lead of the game at 13-10. Leventry wasn't called upon again until the final minute when he booted the game-winner. The Johnstown, Pa. native also punted five times with none of the kicks - including a career-long 61-yarder - returned.

Leventry, the Dukes' starting punter for the past two years, added full-time placekicking duties this season. He is 5-for-6 with 18 points through two games.

Duquesne (1-1), which opened with back-to-back road games for the first time since 2006, kicks off the home season on Saturday, Sept. 17 versus Valparaiso (0-2). Game time is set for 12:10 p.m.
