HARMAR, Pa. - The Duquesne women's tennis team opened its new facility - the Alpha Tennis Center - with a 5-2 loss to Big East rival West Virginia on Wednesday afternoon.
Duquesne falls to 3-7 overall while West Virginia improves to 3-7.
The first two doubles matches were split - WVU's Liv Pettersson and Veronica Cardenas defeating Judy Li and Madeline Bittner 8-5 while the Dukes' Samantha Noble and Megan O'Sullivan were 8-2 winners over Mary Chupa and Emily Mathis.
The doubles point would be decided by the winner of #3 spot between DU's team of Ana Mungo / Tara Majdalani and WVU's Melis Tanik / Ashley Pilsbury. The Dukes got off to an early 3-0 lead, but would only win one game the rest of the way, falling 8-4 and giving the Mountaineers the doubles point.
In singles competition, Duquesne won two of the six matches. Mungo was a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 winner over Tanik at #1 and Li defeated Mathis 6-4, 6-3 at #2.
At #3 singles, O'Sullivan won the first set over Chupa 6-4, but fell 6-1 in the second set and 6-4 in the deciding set.
Noble and Cardenas also split the first two sets at #4 singles - Noble winning the first set 6-0 and Cardenas taking the second set 6-4. In a hard fought third set, it Cardenas who came out on top with a 7-5 win.
WVU took the #5 and #6 singles points in straight sets. Pilsbury over Majdalani at #5 by a score of 7-5, 6-4 and Pettersson over Alrissa Tobe at #6 by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
Next up for Duquesne is Army on Sat. March 21. Match time is at 1:30 P.M.
