PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne's women's basketball team's seven-game winning streak came to an end on Wednesday night, as Richmond battled back from a 21 point deficit for a 72-58 victory at the Palumbo Center.
The Spiders' Brittani Shells scored a game-high 25 points and Crystal Goring added 18 and Abby Oliver scored 16 to lead the Spiders (13-5, 4-0) to their fourth consecutive victory.
Wumi Agunbiade recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Dukes (15-3, 2-1).
Duquesne opened up the game by taking a 12-0 lead. Richmond was held scoreless until the 15:54 mark of the first half on Goring's put back off a Samantha Bilney miss.
The Dukes would see leads as high as 21 points - the first coming after an Alex Gensler 3-pointer with 5:37 to play in the half and the second after a pair of Vanessa Abel foul shots with 4:54 until halftime.
Then the Richmond comeback began. The Spiders responded with a 10-1 run to make the score 38-26 heading into halftime.
A Shells layup at 15:37 got the Spiders within single-digits at 45-36. Three minutes later UR took its first lead of the game at 47-45.
The Dukes would tie the game twice - the later after Gensler's layup with 9:35 to play.
However, UR would score the next six points and never look back. A pair of Goring foul shots at the 3:11 mark put the Spiders up by 11 points at 68-57. The Dukes would go without a field goal the rest of the way.
Up next for Duquesne is La Salle (5-13, 1-2) on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m.
GAME NOTES
- After starting the contest 2-for-11 from the field, Richmond finished 27-of-59 for 45.8 percent, which included shooting 18-of-30 for 60 percent in the second half.
- With her 3-pointer at the 12:48 mark of the first half, Kelly Britcher moved into a tie for 10th place all-time with 101 3-pointers
- Richmond's 12 turnovers was an opponent's season-low
- Duquesne only hit 1-of-13 (8 percent) 3-pointers in the second half
- Pollino moved past Kristi Little into 10th place on the Dukes' all-time scoring list with 1,273 career points
