Sixth year Duquesne University men's tennis coach Rob Castille has announced the team captains for the 2010-11 season. Leading the Dukes this year will be seniors Steve Herchko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and Kyle O'Leary (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh).
"I am excited to name Steve Herchko and Kyle O'Leary as co-captains for the 2010-11 season," said Castille. "Both guys bring different leadership qualities to the table and they complement each other very well. They both are very deserving of this honor."
Herchko, who did not compete last fall, posted a 13-13 overall record last season, including a 12-13 doubles mark at first doubles. He now boasts a 17-5 career record in singles action and a 45-22 mark in doubles play.
"Steve has really grown into a great leader. He came in as a quiet kid and is now one of the most respected, if not the most respected guy on the team. He has had to deal with a lot of adversity with his back injury but I have never once seen him get down or never once heard him complain. I am so proud of the person he has become and I am looking forward to a great year from Herch."
O'Leary posted an impressive 14-2 record in singles action last year to improve his career mark to 22-19. In doubles play last season, he went 16-9 to improve his career totals to 27-13.
"This is the second year in a row Kyle will be co-captain and I look forward to another great year of leadership from him. He has shown great maturity both on and off the court and he always provides such awesome energy that everyone feeds off of. I look to KO to set the tone each and every match for us. I'm confident this will be Kyle's best year ever at Duquesne."
The Dukes open the fall portion of their schedule on Sept. 10-12 as they compete in the Michigan State Invitational.
