PITTSBURGH - Duquesne's Samantha Pollino, Alex Gensler and Wumi Agunbiade combined for 53 points in the Duquesne women's basketball team's 84-69 victory over Saint Francis, Pa. on Wednesday evening.
With the victory, the Dukes improve to 9-2 on the season while the Red Flash fall to 5-6.
Agunbiade finished one rebound shy of recording her fifth double-double of the season as the freshman forward finished with 16 points and nine boards. Pollino recorded 19 points and Gensler added 16 which included a season-high-tying four 3-pointers.
Vanessa Abel dished out seven assists and made a season-best six steals while only committing a pair of turnovers. Jocelyn Floyd handed out a season-best six assists.
The Duquesne bench outscored the Saint Francis, Pa. bench by a 26-15 margin led by Carly Vendemia and Kelly Britcher who each had nine points. Orsi Szecsi scored six and Ahjah Hall a pair for DU.
Allison Daly led SFU with 14 points and Alexandra Williams grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for the Red Flash.
Saint Francis, Pa. jumped out to an early 11-6 lead after a Samantha Leach layup, but Duquesne quickly responded with an 11-2 lead to go up 17-13 at the 12:02 mark of the first half.
Hall's layup at 6:16 made the score 27-18 and gave DU its largest lead of the half at nine points. However, SFU would rattle off 10 straight points after Daly's 3-pointer to go ahead 28-27 with 3:49 to play.
The first half would end with two ties and three lead changes. Agunbiade's layup with one minute to go put Duquesne up 40-32. Saint Francis, Pa. closed out the first half scoring with a Nickia Gibbs layup and a pair of Lilley foul shots.
After 20 minutes, the Dukes were up 40-36.
DU would maintain its lead as Szecsi driving layup with 11:56 to go in the second half followed by a Gensler 3-pointer 30 seconds later gave Duquesne a 14 point advantage at 66-52.
The Dukes would have a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
GAME NOTES:
- Duquesne had a season-high 24 assists and had helpers on 77 percent of their baskets
- Pollino moved past Katie Collins as DU's 13th all-time leading scorer with 1187 points
- 31 field goals tied a season-high (Ohio, 12/16/10)
- Vendemia tied a season-best with nine points
- Duquesne improves to 21-6 all-time against Saint Francis, Pa. and 52-22 against teams in the Northeast Conference
