Women's Basketball Falls to Charlotte 83-78

CHARLOTTE - Shannon McCallum's basket off the inbounds pass with 14 seconds remaining gave Charlotte a 79-78 and started a late 6-0 run to finish the game as they defeated Duquesne 83-78 Saturday afternoon at the Halton Arena.

Aysha Jones scored 20 of her game-high 28 points in the second half for the 49ers who improved to 17-6 overall and 8-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Keri Pryor scored 22 points, Kristi Little added 20 and Samantha Pollino had 13 as the Dukes fell to 13-10 overall and 3-5 in the A-10 loop.

Rachel Frederick surpassed the 1,000 career point total by scoring 12 points.

The Dukes led for the last 13 minutes of the first half and built up an eight point lead three times, the last being with 2:19 remaining. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Erin Floyd and Traci Ray cut the Dukes' lead to two points going into halftime with DU leading 35-33.

DU built their lead back up to 10 points at the 11:38 mark of the second half, 58-48. The 49ers came back with a 15-5 run over the next five minutes to tie the contest at 63-63.

The contest would be tied four more times and with 44 seconds to go, until Little hit a pair of foul shots to put Duquesne up 78-77. That would be the final score of the game for the Dukes as Charlotte would score next five points and come away with the victory.

DU had one of its finest shooting games of the season, connecting of 31-of-61 shots (50.8 percent) and was 10-of-22 (45.5 percent) from beyond the arc.

Charlotte also had a good shooting effort, making 33-of-67 (49.3 percent) shots from the floor and out rebounded Duquesne 40-to-26.

Duquesne returns home for a Wednesday night matchup against Saint Louis. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
