BUFFALO - The Duquesne lacrosse team recorded its first win of the 2009 season after their 9-5 victory over Canisius Saturday afternoon.
Meghan Frederick, Cailin Colegrove and Sarah Cates each scored twice while Ashley Wood, Katie Rekart and Alicia Krause added goals for the Dukes (1-4). Sara Beckstead made a career-best 13 saves and Amy Gladfelter and Mollie Montgomery combined for nine ground balls.
The match started off a defensive battle, as Krause's fourth goal of the season was the only score through the first 20 minutes of play. Frederick and Wood added goals 21 seconds apart to give Duquesne a 3-0 advantage at the 10:30 mark of the first half.
Scores by Colegrove and Rekart added gave DU a five-goal margin before Canisius' Ashley Gray gave the Golden Griffins their only score of the half.
Chelsea Martinez and Gray scored back-to-back goals to open up the second half scoring. Duquesne answered with three straight scores - two by Cates and one by Colegrove to give the Dukes an 8-3 lead at the 17:33 mark.
Martinez's goal with 15:50 to play was followed by Frederick's second of the match 3:36 later. The Griffs' Brianne Laffey closed out the game's scoring with a free position goal with 65 seconds left.
Both teams were close in many statistical categories - Duquesne had 29 shots to Canisius' 27 and picked up three more ground balls (18-to-13). Beckstead's 13 save was two more than CU's Allison Daley. The Griffins led in draw controls, 10-to-6 and turnovers 21-to-19.
The Dukes are off until March 11 when they host Bucknell at Rooney Field. Match time is 4:00 p.m.
