Women's Soccer Signs Seven to National Letters of Intent

Duquesne University head women's soccer coach Tim Zundel announced today the addition of seven student-athletes for the 2009 season.

The seven signees are Shayla Bergeron (F, Hudson, N.H.) Morgan Herbert (M, Dublin, Ohio), Stephanie Rentschler (F, Sylvania, Ohio) Paige Maroney (F/M, Sylvania, Ohio), Michelle Mooren (D, Parma, Ohio), Paige Langhals (D, Strongsville, Ohio), and Barbie Rohm (D, Seneca Valley, Pa.)

Coach Zundel on his 2009 class: "Our staff has worked very hard putting this class together. We are very pleased to have such a good group of student athlete's sign with our program. We feel this group of players will mix nicely with our current squad."

Shayla Bergeron" src="http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/duqu/sports/w-soccer/auto_action/2811183.jpeg " alt="" width="150" height="217" />Bergeron was an extremely accomplished high school athlete. Overall in her four years she amassed 12 Varsity Letters as well as being picked to the New Hampshire All-State teams for both soccer and track. In 2009, Shayla won the indoor track state championship in the 55m sprint and finished second in the 300m event. Her club team the NE Aztecs won the 2008 State Championship. An honor roll student, she will enroll in general studies at Duquesne.

Coach Zundel on Bergeron, "Shayla is a forward who possesses electric pace. She has a good work rate and opposing defenders will find it tough to deal with her speed. She has the ability to score some great goals for us. She will be a nice compliment to our talented front line."

Morgan Herbert" src="http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/duqu/sports/w-soccer/auto_action/2797918.jpeg" alt="Morgan Herbert" />Herbert was a four-year Varsity starter for Dublin Jerome H.S. She scored 65 career goals and was voted the most offensive player of her team in 2007 and 2008. She was selected First Team All League three times, Third-Team All-District in 2007, and First-Team All-District in 2008 as well as Second-Team All-State in 2008. Her high school team won the sectional championships in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Morgan plays club for Ohio Premier where she was a member of the Ohio South ODP State teams for four years. A member of the National Honors Society, she will enroll in general studies.

"Morgan is a very talented midfielder who has good vision and good passing ability." said Coach Zundel. "She will contribute to our already strong midfield unit."

Stephanie RentschlerRentschler was a four-year starter at Sylvania Northview H.S. She led her team to their fourth consecutive Northern Lakes League Championship during her senior year. She was selected to the NSCAA Region IV team, First-team All-State. Stephanie was named both Northwest Ohio District Player of the Year and Northern Lakes League Player of the Year. She scored 21 goals and dished out 13 assists for a total of 55 points for her senior campaign. She was also named team captain her senior year. Rentschler is an honor roll student who will enroll in general studies at Duquesne.

"Stephanie is another talented forward, she possesses a tremendous work rate and she is not afraid to do what it takes to score goals." said Coach Zundel. "She also has good speed and will fit in well with our core of talented players up top."

Paige Maroney" src="http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/duqu/sports/w-soccer/auto_action/2797925.jpeg" alt="Paige Maroney" />Maroney is another addition to the Dukes squad from Sylvania Northview H.S. Paige was previously coached by Zundel at the club level at Pacesetter soccer club in Ohio. Maroney led her H.S. team to the Northern Lakes League Championships from 2005-2008. They were District Champions in 2007 and 2008 as well as Regional Finalists in 2008. Maroney scored 57 goals, 57 assists, totaling 171 points for her career. Despite an injury plagued senior year, she was still named to the First-Team All-District as well as First-Team All-League teams. In her junior year, she was named to NSCAA all Region IV, First-Team All-State and First-Team All-Northwest Ohio District. Paige was also named Northern Lakes League Player of the Year. A National Honor Society student, Maroney plans to enroll in Education at Duquesne.

Coach Zundel on Maroney, "Paige is a talented forward who has a very good work rate and good speed. She is also very attacking minded and knows how to score goals. She is a player who will bolster our already talented front line."

Michelle Mooren" src="http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/duqu/sports/w-soccer/auto_action/2797928.jpeg" alt="Michelle Mooren" width="150" height="250" /> Mooren was a four year Varsity Starter for Holy Name HS. She led her team to four consecutive North Coast League Championships as well as the Div. II State Championship in 2007. She was named First-Team All-Conference her junior and senior years and Second-Team All-State her senior year. She was also named Team MVP and Team captain her senior year. She played club for the Cleveland Internationals who won the Super Y League National Championship in 2004 and 2007. She also played on the Ohio North ODP team in 2005 and the Super Y League Midwest Regional team in 2006.

"Michelle is a very hard working defender who is tough to beat 1v1," said Coach Zundel. "She has good field vision and is able to connect well with the forwards. She will add depth and experience to our backline."

Paige Langhals" src="http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/duqu/sports/w-soccer/auto_action/2797930.jpeg" alt="Paige Langhals" />Langhals was a three-year varsity player at nationally ranked Strongsville HS. She amassed an impressive 53-6-7 record during her career. She was selected to the Greater Cleveland All-Star team in 2008 and the Northeast Ohio Conference First-Team in both 2007 and 2008. She was voted the team's best defender in 2007 and 2008 and led her backline to 35 shutouts in her career. She was also elected team captain in 2008. Paige is on the Ohio North ODP Team and is a four time State Champion with her former club CASA. She currently plays for the Cleveland Internationals. A National Honor Society student, Langhals will enroll in Biology at Duquesne.

"Paige is a talented central defender, who has the ability to help us play more possession oriented out of the back," said Coach Zundel. "She is a very good 1v1 defender and very dominant in the air. She will mix in well with our group of talented defenders."

Rohm was a four-year varsity starter with Seneca Valley HS. In 2007, her team was WPIAL Champions and State Qualifiers. She was her team captain her senior year were she led her team to an impressive 12 shutouts. Her club North Stars in 2008 was PPA State Champions, Regional Champions and National Qualifiers for US Club Soccer. A National Honor Society, student Rohm will enroll in Occupational Therapy at Duquesne.

"Barbie is a player who will add some more experience to our young back line." She is a hardworking defender who brings a lot to the table." said Coach Zundel.

"I am excited to get these players mixed in with our veterans during pre season," said Coach Zundel. "We have our most difficult schedule to date this fall so it should be fun."
