PHILADELPHIA - The Duquesne women's basketball team's comeback fell short Friday afternoon after they fell 58-56 to Richmond at the Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse on the campus of Saint Joseph's University in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship.
Jocelyn Chandler led the Dukes with 18 points. Samantha Pollino scored 14 points and Kristi Little scored 12 points for DU.
Richmond's Crystal Goring recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds and Brittani Shells had a game-best 19 points.
Duquesne trailed by 10 points with less than seven minutes remaining in the contest. A Little layup at 2:55 capped a 10-1 run to get DU within a point at 52-51.
Little sunk a 3-pointer from NBA-range with 51 seconds left to tie the game at 56-56. Shells' jumper with 30 seconds remaining in regulation was the deciding shot as she broke a 56-56 tie. The Dukes' Kristi Little's 3-pointer with two seconds remaining was off and UR's Johanna McKnight grabbed the rebound to end the game.
"I am so proud of the team and how far they have come," said head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio. "They never quit, even when we were down by 10. They continued to fight until the end."
The Dukes finish the season 15-15.
