PITTSBURGH - Kristi Little scored 13 points and Keri Pryor's steal and layup with 18 seconds left halted a late Massachusetts comeback as Duquesne snapped a five-game losing streak in their 61-54 victory over Massachusetts Wednesday night.
The victory put the Dukes (12-14, 3-8) in 12th place in the Atlantic 10 Conference, as they have the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Minutewomen (11-15, 3-8).
Pam Rosanio led UMass with 22 points and Sakera Young pulled down 12 rebounds.
A pair of Pryor foul shots gave the Dukes their largest lead of the game, 11 points, with 8:16 remaining. The Minutewomen responded with a 10-3 run to narrow the Duquesne lead to 53-49 with 2:33 to play.
Little hit four of her game-high seven foul shots in the next 44 seconds to increase the DU lead to eight points at the 1:48 mark.
UMass put themselves in position to come within three points after Young made a jumper and rebounded a Duquesne missed shot on the next possession. As Young brought the ball up the court, Pryor stripped her of the ball and went in for an uncontested layup, giving the Dukes a 59-51 lead.
Little closed out the scoring with a pair of foul shots with four seconds remaining as the Dukes beat UMass for the seventh time in their last 10 tries.
Duquesne, which trailed by seven points early in the game, went ahead for good on a Sam Thompson jumper with 44 seconds left in the first half.
The Dukes won despite shooting 36.8 from the field. More than half of DU's point came off of turnovers (17) and second chances (14). Coming off a great performance at the foul line against Temple (17-19, .895), Duquesne continued their hot hand from the charity stripe converting 12-14 free throws.
Jade Singleton finished with 10 points and tied Pryor with a team-high six rebounds.
Duquesne finishes their road schedule Saturday at Richmond followed by a trip to Rhode Island Feb. 27. The final home game of the regular season will be Mar. 1.
