PITTSBURGH - In a game that was almost identical to the one played Saturday afternoon at Saint Joseph's, the Duquesne women's basketball team needed another buzzer-beater Wednesday night against St. Bonaventure to send the contest into overtime. Unfortunately, the result was similar, as Kristi Little's 3-pointer at the horn was off and the Dukes lost their second consecutive game by three points, 69-66 to the Bonnies.
Katelyn Murray led SBU (16-9, 4-6) with a game-high 17 points.
A Sam Thompson jumper with 8:38 remaining the game tied the score at 50-50, but the Bonnies had a quick answer as Erica Schiefen hit a 3-pointer to start SBU on a 12-3 run giving them a 62-53 lead with 4:20 to go.
The Dukes got as within a point, 67-66, with 12 seconds remaining after Little's layup capped a 13-5 run. After the Duke used their final timeout to set up their defense, a foul sent St. Bonaventure's Dana Mitchell to the line, where she made a pair of foul shots with nine seconds remaining.
A feisty Bonnies defense clamped down of the Dukes in the closing seconds as Little's 3-pointer at the buzzer fell short, giving SBU the 69-66 victory.
St. Bonaventure shot .500 from the field (24-48) and from beyond the arc (6-12). SBU had 17 assists to DU's nine and outrebounded the Dukes 38-31.
Duquesne returns to Philadelphia for the second consecutive weekend as they visit Temple Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
