Duquesne junior long distance runner Tom Slosky (Brackenridge, PA / Highlands) qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships for the second season in a row via Saturday's performance at the NCAA East Regional hosted by the University of Florida.
Slosky and sophomore teammate Derek Dutille (Lebanon, NH / Lebanon) competed in the 3000 meter steeplechase in James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track in Gainesville, Fla.
Slosky finished fourth with a time of 8:45.33 that broke his own school record (8:52.08) set two weeks ago at the IC4A championships. The top five finishers automatically qualified for the NCAA national championships that again will be held in Sacramento, Calif.
Last year, Slosky became the first DU student-athlete to ever qualify for the NCAA Track & Field Championship. He finished fifth in the regional at Greensboro, N.C. with a mark of 8:59.66.
Dutille, who had achieved his personal best while edging Slosky for first place at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship, was 19th of 41 runners with a mark of 9:06.42, just 0.17 seconds off his A-10 time.
The NCAA Championship preliminary steeplechase race is scheduled for Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at 8:00 p.m. pacific time (11:00 p.m ET), with the finals on Friday at 7:10 p.m. PT (10:10 p.m. ET), both at Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex. The tournament hosts are State University of California, Sacramento, and the Sacramento Sports Commission.
