The Duquesne women's tennis team was in competition over Spring Break in Orlando, Florida. On March 4-6 the Dukes competed against Mount St. Mary's, Florida Atlantic University, and James Madison University. Overall, the Dukes emerged with two victories, defeating both Mount St. Mary's and James Madison, 6-1. Against Florida Atlantic, Duquesne dropped a close contest 4-3.
Senior Jacqueline Hughes (McKeesport, PA/McKeesport) was undefeated over the three days of competition. In the no.2 singles spot she convincingly defeated her Mount St. Mary's opponent 6-0, 6-0, and she went on to beat her Florida Atlantic and James Madison singles opponents 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-3, respectively. In no.1 doubles, Hughes teamed up with sophomore Rebecca Poole (Swindon, Wiltshire, UK/New College (Swindon)), winning all three of their matches. The pair beat Mount St. Mary's 8-1, and both Florida Atlantic and James Madison, 8-6. At no.3 singles, Poole also had two victories, beating both her Florida Atlantic and James Madison opponents.
Junior Johanna Bezjak (Salisbury, MD/James M. Bennett) also had an undefeated record over the three days. At no.1 singles, Bezjak defeated each of her three opponents. In no.2 doubles, along with partner, freshman Rachel McGowan (Canfield, OH/Canfield), she was 2-0 in her 2 contests, helping to beat Mount St. Mary's and James Madison. McGowan matched up with freshman Renee Niklewicz (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) in no.2 doubles against Florida Atlantic, dropping the close contest 8-6. At no.4 singles, McGowan was 2-1 earning wins over Mount St. Mary's and James Madison.
At no.6 singles, senior Alicia McNamara (North Augusta, SC/Eastern HS-Pendleton School) was 2-1, as she earned victories over Mount St. Mary's and James Madison. Also, at no.3 doubles, junior Andrea Sailer (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic) and sophomore Alexandria Albano (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) posted a 2-1 record as they beat their Mount St. Mary's and James Madison opponents.
As a team, the Dukes hold a 5-3 record this spring, and they will look to continue to improve on their record with a home match this Saturday, March 17, against Temple University.
