2007 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship Bracket
CHARLOTTE - For only the second time in the 13 years the Duquesne women's soccer team has participated in the Atlantic 10 Conference, they have qualified for the post season tournament. The Dukes (11-6-0, 8-3-0) are seeded third and face the number six seed Richmond tomorrow afternoon at 5:30 p.m. at Transamerica Field on the campus of Charlotte.
Few thought the Dukes would be in this position, as they were picked to finish 12th of the 14 teams in the A-10 at the beginning of the season. This just weeks after James Walker accepted the vacant assistant coaching position at Penn State in July and Tim Zundel was named interim head coach.
"We had goals in four phases of the season," said Zundel. "We accomplished our goals in the preseason, the non-conference season, and the conference season. Now, our postseason goal is to win the A-10 final and make it into the NCAA Tournament."
The team that was picked to finish 12th in 2007, set program records with 11 overall wins and eight Atlantic 10 wins. The Dukes also had a program record four consecutive shutouts from Oct. 14 to Oct. 24 and tied the 1996 and 1998 squads with eight shutouts.
Several Dukes were among A-10 leaders including Audra Mathews ranking second in assists (11), sevenths in points (20) and eighth in shots (53). Faye Rasmussen, whose overtime goal on the final match of the season solidified DU's third place finish, was tied for second in the A-10 with four game-winning goals. Rasmussen, along with freshman Samantha Kaiser (the Oct. 8 A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week), scored six times this season which tied the duo for 10th in the conference.
Freshman Gabby Morrin's five shutouts were the second most in a single-season in program history and were tied for fourth in the conference. Fellow keeper Brittany Findley recorded three shutouts this season which was ninth best in the conference.
Individuals were not the only one who received rankings this season. For the first times since the 2006 preseason poll, DU was ranked by Soccer Buzz Magazine in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
The only other time the Dukes appeared in the A-10 postseason was in 2005. Charlotte's goal just 48 seconds into overtime gave the 49ers a 2-1 victory.
If the Dukes advance tomorrow, they will face Fordham Friday night at 9:00 p.m.
