PITTSBURGH - Tim Zundel has been named head coach for the Duquesne women's soccer program as announced by athletics director Greg Amodio today.
Zundel, who coached the Dukes to a program record 11 wins this season and a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship, served as interim head coach for the 2007 season after former head coach James Walker took a men's assistant coaching position at Penn State in July. DU tied for second place in the A-10 which was its highest finish since it joined the conference in 1995. Duquesne was picked 12th of 14 teams in the conference's preseason poll.
"Tim was able to take the program to the next level as well as gain respect from his players and opponents," Amodio said. "His desire to succeed makes us pleased he is going to be the new leader of the women's soccer program." 2007 marked the fifth season Zundel has been with the Duquesne women's soccer program. He served as an assistant coach under Walker from 2003-06.
"I would like to thank Duquesne University and Greg Amodio for the opportunity to step into a full-time position," Zundel said. "I also would like to thank the players, staff and parents for their support all season long. I look forward to the challenges ahead and will continue to develop the team and have success in the Atlantic 10 Conference."
Amodio also announced that Caitlin Hughes-Whittaker was hired as the women's soccer assistant coach. Hughes-Whittaker served in the same capacity on an interim basis during the 2007 season.
