PITTSBURGH, PA - A solid second half performance by visiting Rhode Island helped the Rams to a 74-57 Atlantic 10 victory over Duquesne Friday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center. URI's Sofi Mojidi had a game-best 33 points on 10-18 shooting, including four from beyond the arc and tied the game-high with seven rebounds. Amanda McGrew added 21 markers for the Rams.
The Dukes were led by Loui Hall's 18 points. Carmen Bruce and Kristi Little also scored in double-digits for the Red & Blue with 12 and 11 tallies respectively. Hall's five rebounds was team best. Little also snagged had a game-high four steals.
Trailing 4-0 2:02 into the first half, Duquesne used a 13-4 run as Little hit her first three shots to give DU a 13-8 lead at the 12:16 mark.
Mojidi's hit back-to-back treys to give the Rams a 14-13 lead with 11:12 to go in the first stanza. Over the next 5:23 there were three ties and six lead changes. Rhode Island would grab the lead on Tanja Licina's jumper (23-21) with 5:11 remaining. URI would take a 33-27 advantage into halftime.
Duquesne chiseled away at the deficit in the second frame as a Bruce lay-up at 13:53 in the brought the Dukes within two points - 42-40. The Red & Blue hit a cold spell, as they were on the wrong end of a 20-4 run over the next 6:18. DU turned the ball over five times and could muster only one field goal and a pair of foul shots during the drought which left them trailing 62-44 with 8:08 remaining in regulation.
The Rhode Island lead got as high as 19 points with under two minutes left. The contest ended 74-57 as the Rams improved to 4-12 and 2-0 in the A-10. Coach Durkin's squad fell to 6-9 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
URI out-shot DU .491 (27-55) to .449 (22-49). The Rams also had the edge in rebounding 38-24 and blocks 2-1. The Dukes had nine steals to the Rams' eight.
The Red & Blue are off until Thursday Jan. 18 when they host conference opponent Saint Louis at 7:00 pm. The game will be broadcast by CSTV from the Palumbo Center.
