For Immediate Release Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Duquesne women's lacrosse team ended its home season with a 12-11 Atlantic 10 victory against George Washington in overtime Sunday afternoon at Rooney Field. The Dukes (10-4, 3-2) were led by senior Kelly Mulford (Lutherville, Md.) with six goals, including the game-winning free position shot with :02 ticking in overtime. Sophomore Ashley Wood (Shaker Heights, Ohio) added three goals while senior Caroline Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) and freshman Kathleen McNish (Caldwell, N.J.) recorded two assists each.
Senior Krista Mann (Wooster, Ohio) won a game-best six draws and caused two turnovers and keeper Meredith Norris (Morgantown, W.Va.) had eight saves in 66 minutes of action.
George Washington (5-10, 1-4) was led by Kristin Karcsh with four scores and Laura Hostetler with two goals.
The Colonials jumped to a 2-0 lead on goals by Colleen Schmidt and Annie Howley before freshman Keri Drexel (Pequea, Pa.) put the Dukes on the board with an assist from McNish at the 15:21 mark. George Washington hit free position goals in the 17th and 20th minutes for a 4-1 margin, but the Dukes answered back with scored from Mulford in the 23rd minute and Wood in the 25th minute for a 4-3 DU reach. Meghan Cratty's free position goal at 28:48 ended the frame's scoring and gave the visiting Colonials a 5-3 cushion at the break.
Duquesne opened the second stanza with back-to-back goals in :57 seconds as Wood found the back of the cage at :43 and Mulford sailed an unassisted score off the draw at :57 for a 5-5 game. GW followed suit with two goals within a minute for a 7-5 advantage just 5:47 into play. Mulford then hit two unassisted goals at 9:32 and 9:51 for a 7-7 tie, but the Dukes would still not see a lead as Hostetler scored unassisted at 11:50 for an 8-7 edge. Mann started a three-goal drive for the Dukes taking the give from Gallagher in the 12th minute followed by Allison Smith's free position goal at 19:04 and an unassisted score from Mulford at 20:35 for a 10-8 Duquesne advantage. The Colonials never gave up and tied the score for the third time at 10-10 on a Karcsh score, but Wood gave the Dukes an 11-10 edge unassisted 27:47 into the period. Karcsh knotted the game and sent it into OT with a free position score with just :19 remaining in regulation.
Mulford hit a free position goal with :02 ticking in the first 3:00 period of overtime for a 12-11 edge that would secure the win after the second 3:00 overtime half went scoreless.
The Dukes return to action next Friday, Apr. 28, at they travel to Massachusetts for a 4:00 pm Atlantic 10 contest. DU closes out the regular season at Temple Sun. Apr. 30 at 1:00 pm.
