Three Dukes recorded hat tricks in a 17-5 Atlantic 10 lacrosse victory over visiting Saint Joseph's Thursday afternoon on a sunny Rooney Field. Seniors Kelly Mulford (Lutherville, Md.) and Meredith Williams (Potomac, Md.) and freshman Keri Drexel (Pequea, Pa.) recorded three goals each to tie the game lead. Junior Courtney Tamasitis (Boyertown, Pa.) had a game-best two assists and added two goals and four ground balls as well. Sophomore Ashley Wood (Shaker Heights, Ohio) led the Dukes with three caused turnovers and senior Alison Smith (BelAir, Md.) won three draws. Senior keeper Meredith Norris had 13 saves on 31 shots.
Senior Kerry O'Connell paced the Hawks with three scores and keeper Sarah Magan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded five saves.
Duquesne (9-4, 2-2) saw Wood score unassisted :19 into play which started an 11-0 run over the first 21:30 of action. Kathleen McNish scored from Kelly Mulford followed by a Gallagher goal set up by Tamasitis for a 3-0 edge at 4:45. Unassisted goals by Tamasitis, Wood, Smith, Drexel, Gallagher, Mulford and Williams set up a 10-0 lead at 18:51 before Smith fed Williams at 21:30 for the 11-0 margin. Saint Joseph's (4-8, 1-4) got on the board after an unassisted score from O'Connell at 24:48, but the Red & Blue closed out the frame with a solo goal from Tamasitis and a free position goal by Mulford for a 13-1 lead at the break. Duquesne out-shot the Hawks 19-10 in the first frame.
Saint Joseph's played a more physical game in the second frame holding the Dukes to just four goals on 10 shots, but would hit the back of the cage just four times itself on 21 shots. Mulford opened the second stanza's scoring with a free position goal at 3:05 before Williams scored from a Tamasitis feed at 4:39 for a 15-1 lead. Saint Joseph's hit goals in the 12th and 17th minutes for a 15-3 deficit, but Drexel answered back with a free position goal at 20:54. The Hawks' O'Connell scored at 21:40 and Christina Colangelo took a feed from Jen Fletcher at 27:25, but they still trailed 16-5. The freshman tandem of Drexel and McNish teamed up for the final score of the game at 28:44 for the 17-5 final.
Saint Joseph's out-shot the Dukes 31-29 for the game while the Dukes held a 24-20 edge in ground balls.
Duquesne closes out its home season this Sunday, Apr. 23, hosting George Washington at 1:00 pm in Atlantic 10 match-up.
