Box Score

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -- Duquesne University's women's lacrosse team topped the last unbeaten Division I program with a 13-9 victory over No. 18 St. Bonaventure, Tuesday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.

Senior Kelly Mulford (Lutherville, Md. / Maryvale Prep) scored six goals and assisted on two others to lead Duquesne (8-4, 1-2 Atlantic 10). DU defeated St. Bonaventure (12-1, 3-1 A-10) for the fourth straight year.

This was DU's second game in a row against a top 20 team.

The Dukes jumped out to an 8-2 lead midway through the first half and then frustrated SBU the rest of the way.

Duquesne scored twice in the first four minutes on goals by Mulford and senior Caroline Gallagher (West Chester, Pa. / Henderson), who had two goals and one assist for the Red and Blue. Mulford assisted on the junior's score.

Katelyn Faas, who led the Bonnies with three goals, scored less than a minute later to make it 2-1. Junior Courtney Tamasitis (Boyertown, Pa. / Boyertown) and Mulford, with Gallagher returning a set-up, scored 34 seconds of each other to extend the lead to 4-1.

St. Bonaventure's Katie Hurley made it 4-2 four minutes later. The Dukes answered with four straight markers within two minutes by Gallagher, junior Meg Cloutman (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester), freshman Kathleen McNish (Caldwell, N.J. / James Caldwell) and senior Alison Smith (BelAir, Md. / C. Milton Wright) to go ahead 8-2 with 13:16 left in the half.

The Bonnies tallied two goals four minutes later. Mulford netted her third score with 2:03 on the clock to lead Duquesne to a 9-4 halftime edge, the first time this season the Bonnies were behind at the break.

SBU outscored Duquesne 5-4 in the second half while the Dukes again went six ahead, 13-7, on Mulford's final goal just under 15 minutes before the final whistle. Nicole Motondo's goal with just 14 seconds left cut the deficit to four.

Senior Meredith Norris (Morgantown, WV / Morgantown) recorded 12 saves, seven in the second half, to preserve the victory. Eboni Preston recorded eight saves.

The Bonnies moved into the Interercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association top 20 poll at number 18 earlier today -- the southwest New York school's first ever national ranking. In the Dukes' previous outing last Friday, two Spider scores in the final five minutes enabled now-#12 Richmond to pull out an 11-10 victory.

The Red and Blue return to Pittsburgh for a Thursday, April 20, 2006, match against Saint Joseph's (4-7, 1-3 A-10) at 4:00 p.m. on Rooney Field.
