The Duquesne women's lacrosse team suffered a heart-breaking 11-10 Atlantic 10 loss to visiting and ninth-ranked Richmond Friday afternoon on Rooney Field. Junior Courtney Tamasitis led the Dukes with three goals and added an assist and Ashley Wood notched three goals as well. Senior Kelly Mulford added two scores while freshman Kathleen McNish and senior Caroline Gallagher added one goal.
Richmond (12-2, 4-0) was led by freshman Mandy Friend and junior Ashley Friend with four goals each.
Tamasitis and Wood scored goals two and eight minutes into action to give the Dukes (7-4, 0-2) a two-goal edge before Mandy and Ashley Friend recorded free position goals in the 12th and 13th minute to not the game at 2-2. Wood hit an unassisted goal in the 14th minute for a 3-2 edge, but Richmond knotted the score at 3-3 with a free position shot in the 19th minute. Gallagher gave the Dukes a 4-3 edge in the 21st minute unassisted, but Richmond ended the half with three unanswered goals in the 23rd, 24th and 29th minute for a 7-4 advantage at the break.
Tamasitis hit the back of the Spider's cage unassisted 1:25 into the second stanza followed by a Mulford score from Williams in the 4th minute to get to a 6-7 reach. Two free position goals gave the Spiders a 9-6 cushion at 10:59, but Mulford scored from Tamasitis less than a minute later for a 7-9 reach that would start a 4-0 Duquesne scoring drive. Kathleen McNish scored unassisted in the 13th minute followed by a free position goal by Tamasitis in the 17th minute and an unassisted goal by Wood in the 25th minute for a 10-9 Duquesne advantage. Richmond's Mandy Friend tied the game at 26:18 before sister Ashley Friend scored from Allison Nuzzi with :25 on the clock for an 11-10 lead that would end the game's scoring.
Duquesne held a 25-24 margin in shots, but Richmond won the advantage on draws winning 13 to DU's 10. Duquesne caused 10 of Richmond's 21 turnovers for the game.
Krista Mann and Mollie Montgomery led Duquesne with three caused turnovers each and Mann snagged four ground balls. Tyneisha Harris and Alison Smith tied the team lead with three draws won each.
Duquesne ends a six-game home stand and travels to St. Bonaventure on Tues. Apr. 18 for a 4:00 pm Atlantic 10 contest.
