First year head coach Mike Scerbo opened a new chapter of Duquesne women's lacrosse with a 10-7 victory over Longwood at the University of Denver. Kelly Mulford led the game with four goals while Courtney Tamasitis found the back of the cage twice. DU is back in action on Sunday facing host Denver.
Longwood put the first goal of the game on the board before Tamasitis scored a free position goal to spark a 3-0 drive for the Red & Blue. Ashley Wood and Mulford scored in the spree for a 1-3 Duquesne lead. Longwood answered back with two scores for a 3-3 tie, but the Dukes' Tamasitis and Meredith Williams hit free position goals to aid in a 5-4 Duquesne lead at the break.
Longwood tied the score 5-5 in the opening minute of the second frame, but Mann and Keri Drexel hit unassisted goals for a 7-5 Duquesne lead. Longwood brought the game to a one-goal reach (6-7) once again with 19 minutes ticking but Mulford went on a three-goal scoring spree hitting an unassisted and free position goal within a minute for a 9-6 edge. She found the back of the cage for the fourth time in the 12th minute for a 10-6 Dukes' edge.
Krista Mann and Ashley Wood led the Dukes' defensive play with three caused turnovers each. The Dukes forced 10 of Longwood's 17 turnovers in the contest.
Keeper Meredith Norris recorded four saves on 11 shots to take the win.
Duquesne is back in action this Sunday facing host Denver.
