DU Men Set 7 New School Records

April 18, 2005

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Duquesne's outdoor men's track and field team established seven new school records this weekend. Coach Bryan Delsite's distance runners competed at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic while another group went up against 17 teams at the University of Virginia's Lou Onesty / Milton G. Abramson Invitational. Even with part of the squad at Bucknell, the Dukes came in 11th place at the ACC school's competition.

Here are the new records:

U. Va. Invitational

  • Sophomore Luchin Lee set a new 400 meter hurdles mark of 54.79 breaking his previous school record of 54.84 accomplished at last month's Raleigh Relays.
  • Fellow soph Todd Mills finished the 400 meter dash in 49.46 eclipsing the standard of 49.95 he also set at Raleigh.
  • Junior Ryan Wotus broke his Duquesne pole vault record of 14 feet, 1.25 inches set at the VCU Ram Invitational on March 18th. Wotus's leap of 15 feet, 1 inch this weekend was almost a full foot higher than his previous top height.
  • For the fourth time in four competitions this season, Duquesne's 4 x 400 meter relay team (Justin Gunter, Lee, John Heinlein and Mills) set a new school record of 3:19.25; their previous best was 3:19.60 at the April 2nd Western Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Championships.

Bucknell Classic

  • Junior Gary Malinko set a new school record with a time of 3:50.57 in the 1,500 meter run invitational. This broke his previous Duquesne best of 3:51.69 set last season at the IC4A Championships.
  • Two Dukes broke senior Ryan Bender's school 5,000 meter run record of 14:54.11 that he set last season at this same Bucknell meet. Bender finished eighth with a time of 14:37.35 while sophomore Chris Horvat's sixth place mark of 14:28.51 is Duquesne's new standard.
  • Freshman Tom Slosky won the gold in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a 9:13.22 result. This broke Pat McGuire's previous Duquesne record of 9:13.82 which was set in April 2003.
