Nov. 2, 2005

Four Duquesne University women's soccer players have earned post-season Atlantic 10 laurels, announced today by the Atlantic 10 Conference. Leading the group is sophomore defender Emily Sedgwick (Syracuse, N.Y./The Loomis Chaffey School) who is just the fourth Duke to be tabbed a first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection. Joining her on the All-Atlantic 10 list is second-team honoree, Audra Mathews (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy), a sophomore midfielder, senior midfielder Erica Carey (Wilmington, N.C./J.T. Hoggard) who was named an honorable mention pick and freshman All-Rookie selection Shannon Rengers (Mt. Lebanon, Pa./Mt. Lebanon). Duquesne earned its first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship berth and will face Charlotte in the opening match Thursday at 5:30 pm at the University of Dayton.

Sedgwick, a sophomore defender, earns her first Atlantic 10 honor after leading a strong Duquesne defense. She started 11 of the team's 16 matches and was a key factor in the Dukes racking up five team shutouts and limiting its opponent to 1.56 goals and 8.37 shots per game. Sedgwick is tied for second for Duquesne with three assists and scored her first collegiate goal this year, which happened to be the game-winner vs. Charlotte.

Mathews followed up a strong freshman campaign and takes her second consecutive second-team All-Conference citation after leading the Dukes with 18 points. The midfielder started all 16 matches and garnered a team-best eight assists, putting her third among A-10 players. She is third on the team with five goals, two of which were game-winners - Richmond & Jacksonville. In the Duquesne records books, Mathews is first in career assists (19), second in points (45) and tied for fifth in goals (13).

Carey, a senior midfielder, earns her first post-season honor as an All-Conference Honorable Mention pick. The team captain was second for Duquesne with six goals and added three assists for 15 points. She started all 16 matches and landed the game-winning goals at Temple and vs. George Washington. Carey went 2-2 on penalty kicks this season. Her score in the season finale vs. the GW Colonials put her as the Dukes' all-time leading goal scorer with 19. Carey also stands second with 14 assists, is tied for second with six game-winning goals and is third with 44 career points.

Rengers is just the fourth Duke to take Atlantic 10 All-Rookie honors. The freshman forward started all 16 contests and owns a team-best seven goals. Rengers is responsible for the game-winner scores against Alabama A & M and Vermont and adds two assists for 16 points - second on the team. Her seven scores ranks sixth on the Dukes' single-season list. Rengers was also tabbed the Sept. 12 Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week.

The foursome helped lead Duquesne to its most-successful season with an overall mark of 10-5-1. No other team in the program's 11-year history has hit the 10-win mark. The team tied the school record for most Atlantic 10 wins with its 5-4-0 showing. The Dukes finished tied for fifth in the 14-team Atlantic 10 standings and earned the sixth and final championship berth by virtue of a tiebreaker with UMass and Xavier.
