Two Duquesne University women's soccer players have been named to the 2004 Atlantic 10 preseason soccer All-Conference team in a vote conducted by league head coaches.
Freshmen Audra Mathews (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) and Kelly Reed (South Park, Pa./South Park) were selected to the 12-member All-Rookie squad
Mathews, a midfielder, was a first team All-Girls Greater Cincinnati pick and led her team in scoring as a senior. She helped her squad advance to the state semi-finals each season. Mathews was an all-city pick as a senior and a 2003 academic all-star. In 2003, her St. Ursula H.S. squad was ranked #1 in the nation and she was tabbed the All-Star/All-City game MVP. Mathews was also a second team All-GGCL as a junior and helped lead her South East Premier Cardinals Club team to the 2001, 02 and 03 state semi-finals.
A forward, Reed scored 120 goals and added 89 assists as a prep leading South Park H. S. to four consecutive WPIAL AA Section 4 titles and an overall record of 76-21-2. A three-time all-section pick, she was a 2002 and 2003 PA Soccer Coaches Association All-State honoree. The team captured the 2001 WPIAL AA championship and they advanced to at least the WPIAL semifinals each season. Reed was lauded as the Pittsburgh Tribune Review Player of the Year.
Duquesne, which is under the direction of second-year head coach James Walker, returns seven starters and 16 letterwinners from last-year's 8-10-2 squad. The Dukes open the 2004 season August 27-29 at the Bowling Green Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio.
