Dukes Holmes Named All-Academic

Nov. 4, 2004

Duquesne University's Caitlin Holmes (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) has been named a 2004 CoSIDA First Team District 2 Women's Soccer Academic All-America honoree. It is her second consecutive first team honor. She is one of just 23 Division I student-athletes from Pennsylvania, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey and West Virginia to be selected. Holmes will now be listed on the National Team ballot which will be released on Nov. 23.

Holmes earns her second-straight first team CoSIDA Academic All-America citation boasting a 3.91 GPA in physics. The senior defender helped the Dukes post four shutouts this season en-route to a 9-10-1 record, tying the school mark for wins in a season. Holmes was a key contributor leading the defense which allowed just 1.92 goals per game. On the offensive side of play, she recorded the game-winning score in the Duquesne's 4-2 win over Massachusetts in the regular season finale.

She was also named a 2004 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer All-Academic honoree and was tabbed the league's Academic Student-Athlete of the year in a vote by A-10 Sports Information Directors.

A 2003 Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference pick as well, she has two goals and two assists on her career for six points. Both of her goals were game-winners. Holmes is also part of a team which has racked-up 13 shutouts over the past four seasons. She is a member of Honors College and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.

To be eligible for the Academic All-America award, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore at their institution, be a starter or important reserve and have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.00 scale).

She joins the Dukes' Noah Salsi and Andrew Bell who were named to the men's soccer District 2 team as well.

The Academic All-America soccer teams are the first of 12 that will be selected this academic year.
