Duquesne University's head women's soccer coach Dawn Crow has announced the signing of Martine Gilbert (Wilmington, N.C./J. T. Hoggard) and Erica Carey (Wilmington, N.C./J. T. Hoggard) to National Letters of Intent for the 2002 season. They are the first signees for the second-year Duquesne mentor.
Together, the duo helped post a three-year record of 53-7-5 entering their spring senior season. During this span, Hoggard High has won two Mid-Eastern AAAA Conference titles and has advanced to the state AAAA championships each year.
Gilbert, a 5-3 midfielder, is a three-year letterwinner and starter and was named to the 2000 and 2001 All-AAAA regional and all-conference teams. She was an all-conference honorable mention in 1999. Gilbert chose Duquesne over Tulane, Georgia and Vanderbilt. She plans to major in athletics training at Duquesne.
Carey, a 5-7 midfielder, is also a three-year starter and letterwinner and has led her Hoggard squad in scoring each year. The three-time all-conference and All-AAAA regional honoree has racked up 64 goals and 30 assists entering her senior campaign. Carey has been a member of the North Carolina Olympic Development Program since 1998 and a three year-member of the North Carolina State championship Charlotte Ladies Blue club team. Carey chose the Dukes over NC State and UNC-Charlotte.
Gilbert and Carey will be united with Coach Crow, whom they played for on the Wilmington Wave select team.
