Matesa Collects Third Atlantic 10 Weekly Accolade

Senior forward named A-10 Offensive Player of the Week in final weekly honors of 2025

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Senior forward Maya Matesa of the Duquesne University women's soccer team was named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week Monday in the final weekly awards of the 2025 season. It marks the third honor of the year for Matesa, the most ever collected by a member of the Dukes in a season in program history.

In helping Duquesne close out the regular season on a three-game winning streak and clinching a home game in the Atlantic 10 Championship for the first time since 2017, Matesa tallied seven points thanks to three goals and an assist.

In a 5-1 victory at St. Bonaventure (10/23), Matesa gave the Dukes a 3-1 lead, taking a feed from junior Kayla Leseck and scoring at 25:37. Two days later in the regular-season finale against La Salle (10/25) at Rooney Field, Matesa wasted no time putting the Dukes on the board, placing a pass to classmate Brianna Moore, who buried a goal 47 seconds into the contest to give Duquesne an early 1-0 edge.

Matesa would find the back of against the Explorers later in the half, pushing the advantage to 3-0, on another feed from Leseck, at 28:53. The strike proved to be the game-winning goal, her sixth of the year. Matesa would tack on her second goal of the contest early in the second half, this time taking a pass from Moore before burying a one-on-one opportunity. The two goals in the win over La Salle marked the sixth time in 2025 Matesa finished with multiple scores as Duquesne improved to 17-1-1 (.921) over the last four years when she scores a goal.

The performance by Matesa in the win over the Explorers puts a stamp on the most dynamic offensive campaign during the regular season in school history. She enters the 2025 Atlantic 10 Championship with totals of 17 goals, five assists and 39 points, owning program single-season standards for goals and points. In the NCAA Division I rankings, Matesa is tied for third in goals with Izzy Engle of Notre Dame out of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) as well as fourth in points, trailing Engle by one.

Matesa also was named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week in the first weekly report from the conference August 18, 2025, and was bestowed the plaudit again a week later. In earning the honor three times this season, Matesa ties the career record for conference weekly honors that was established by Michelle Guna (1997-00), who was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week once each in 1998, 1999 and 2000 prior to the conference designating both an offensive and defensive weekly award.

In the career record book on the Bluff, Matesa is the program's all-time leader in goals (29), ranks second in points (69) and is tied for seventh in assists (11). In addition, her nine career game-winning goals is tied for second with former midfielder Lauren Bracco (2000-03), just one off the school record of 10 that is held by former forward Katie O'Connor (2015-18).

Led by Jessica Giegucz, in her first season as head coach at Duquesne, the Dukes will host No. 6 seed Fordham in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Atlantic 10 Championship Saturday, Nov. 1, at 2:30 p.m. at Rooney Field. Giegucz has led the Dukes to an overall record of 12-5-1 (.694), matching the program standard for wins in a season that was originally established in 2015.

Duquesne has also established single-season team records for goals (43) and points (108) this year, as 2025 marks the first time the Dukes have scored at least 40 goals in a campaign as well as the third time eclipsing the 100-point plateau. The 108 points breaks the old record of 104 that was set in 2004 and stood for over 20 years.
