Pittsburgh, Pa. – Senior forward Maya Matesa of the Duquesne University women's soccer team was named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week Monday. It marks the second consecutive year a member of the Dukes takes home one of the first weekly honors of the season and the first career A-10 Offensive Player of the Week nod for Matesa.

In a 3-2 triumph at Kent State (8/17) in Duquesne's 2025 season opener, Matesa scored a pair of goals, including the game winner on a penalty kick, to help the Dukes erase a 2-0 halftime deficit and give head coach Jessica Giegucz a victory in her first game on the sidelines with the program.

The first goal of the contest for Matesa came at 68:16, as she took a pass from the corner from junior Kayla Leseck before curling around a defender and launching a shot with her left foot that found the far left of the goal to help cut Duquesne's deficit in half.

The Dukes were able to get the equalizer as well as the eventual game-winning goal on a penalty kick, with each coming within the span of 46 seconds. Senior forward Mackenzie Muir supplied the first goal from the spot to tie the contest, 2-2, at 71:01 before the Dukes were awarded another penalty kick at 71:47. Matesa went to the spot and followed through, producing her fourth career game-winning goal and first since 2023.

Duquesne's 2025 season opener marked the 50th career game for Matesa over the last four years, including her 40th start, and she has amassed career totals of 14 goals, six assists and 34 points. She is tied for 10th in program history for goals with Shaina Geisler (2006-09) and needs just one more point to move into a tie for 10th in program history with Faye Rasmussen (2004-07) and Deena DeBaldo (2017-21).

Led by Giegucz, Duquesne opens the home portion of its 2025 schedule Thursday, August 21, with a 1:00 p.m. match against Saint Francis at Rooney Field. The contest is the first of a soccer doubleheader on the Bluff, as the men's program will open its 2025 campaign at 4:00 p.m. against Seton Hill.
