Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University women's tennis team opened up its fall campaign this weekend at the Carnegie Mellon Invite at the CMU Tennis Courts.
Overall, the Dukes finished 11-3 in singles play while going 4-4 during doubles competition. Duquesne battled the host Carnegie Mellon and Division III Case Western Reserve.
SINGLES COMPETITION
Four different Duquesne players went undefeated in singles competition, all of them going 2-0 on the weekend. Senior
Kaya Rand opened her day by defeating Joycie Lu of Carnegie Mellon 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) before downing Anika Joshi of Carnegie Mellon 6-3, 6-2. Junior
Taisia Yakunina was victorious against Prachi Shah of Case Western Reserve 6-1, 6-3 before capturing a 6-3, 6-3 win over Zoe Angell from Carnegie Mellon.
Sophomore
Sofia Serrano tallied a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sara Fernandez of Case Western Reserve before securing a win over Prachi Shah (Case Western Reserve) 6-4, 6-3. Classmate
Mila Badics earned a come from behind victory over Katalina Wang (Case Western Reserve) 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) before carding a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) win over Katie Wong (Case Western Reserve).
Junior
Jasa Roka went 1-1 on the weekend in singles play, defeating Ellior Rose (Case Western Reserve) 6-4, 6-1 as sophomore
Alexandra O'Brien and freshman
Denisse Arinez Guilarte each captured a win during their Duquesne debuts.
DOUBLES COMPETITION
In doubles competition, a pair of teams went 2-0 on the weekend. Badics and Roka earned a 6-2 victory over Anna Kan and Laurel Utterback of Case Western Reserve before securing a victory over Anna Chow and Anika Joshi of Carnegie Mellon, 6-2. Rand and O'Brien teamed up and earned themselves a pair of victories, downing Shelly Zinchenko and Rachel Li (Carnegie Mellon) 6-1 before capturing a 6-0 sweep over Maya Brink and Ellior Rose (Case Western Reserve).
